[Maya](#) Happy Juneteenth, {NAME}! Nearly two and half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, on June 19, 1865, the remaining Black people who had been enslaved by white Americans were finally declared legally freed. This historical event marks our Independence Day. I grew up in a household that fought for dignity and justice -- with a father who threw himself in front of bulldozers set to destroy Black neighborhoods and a mother who was arrested fighting for better schools for Black children. My parents were committed to the fight for our community and for racial justice. It's why since Day One, my campaign's message has been to reimagine New York City so that it works for everyone -- no matter your race, nationality, or economic status. Here in NYC, we are faced with racism every day. Communities of color bear the brunt of our City's problems. These inequalities have only been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. New Yorkers of color are suffering while too many people have turned a blind eye. Our work continues until all Americans can experience true, lived equality in housing, health care, our justice system, at the ballot box, in education, and in our everyday encounters. In just three days, our campaign has the opportunity to create another historical and significant event -- electing the first-ever Black woman to lead the largest City in the country. {NAME}, it's important all Americans recognize the magnitude of this anniversary. If we're going to make our City and our country a fairer, more just place for all -- it's on all of us to take a stand.
