The playing field is better but still not level for us. That didn't stop me from saying that "it's our time." I am so thankful for the NYC public matching program & Campaign Finance Board. It is one of the election reforms that help non-traditional candidates like me, people who don't come from political machines and won't take money from powerful private interests, dare to declare our candidacies. Even so, women, especially Black women, are at a major fundraising disadvantage. In the Democratic Mayoral primary, I had less than a year to raise money, while people who had already served in office, had been fundraising for years. Eric Adams, for example, had more money to spend on his campaign than Kathryn Garcia and I combined. The great news is that she and I both gave the men a run for their money. And the reality for this Black woman's campaign is that our principles paid off, but now we will carry debt on the books until we get our final $1 million public payment in two years. With deep gratitude to our vendors, who believed in the mission and now wait patiently for payment, and to the reformers who brought us this critical public finance system, I say thank you! And look forward to supporting the critical public finance system so that women continue to win. And now I'm asking, [will you contribute what you can now to help us pay down our debt before the final public funds payment? Your donation will help us manage the audit process and help out small vendors; while we work through the two-year long public finance audit process to get our $1 million public matching dollars. This process is not free, and our vendors helped get us this far.]( Onward, Maya We're building a movement by and for the people of NYC. Thanks to New York City's matching funds program, contributions up to $250 from NYC residents are generally matched 8-1 by the City. That means a $5 contribution becomes $45 or $50 becomes $450. No amount is too small. Rush a donation today.
