Dec 17, 2017, 03:53 PM My Dearest Readers, Some of you have written me since November 17th, when we installed a program that requires you to turn off any ad blocking software to access the site--something called WHITELISTING. Most of your emails contained messages of warm concern, others a few questions, and, thankfully, very, very few complaints. (But, wow! Some of those were vociferous screeds that if the punishment of being hanged, drawn, and quartered were still legal, I'd be lying in pieces somewhere in a bloody heap!) This has been a terrible and gut-wrenching decision. But with the downturn in the digital market (advertising dollars wise), I needed to make a decision: Fire part of our hardworking five-person team and cut off some or all of their livelihood or ask readers to view ads for the short time they visit the site. (Did you know the average time on the site per person is fewer than three minutes?) In the end, it was no contest. I’m responsible to those who work for me. Our revenue has been cut by almost 60% as compared to three years ago by advertisers--even though we're producing more content and have record numbers of people visiting us. That means we're working twice as hard to earn half as much. Unlike other sites such as CNN.com and Forbes.com, which require you to turn off any ad blockers to enter, we don't have alternative streams of revenue. The site is our sole source of income, at least at the moment. We did play with the idea of a donation button, a Kickstarter campaign, even converting LC into a subscription-based site, like Cook's Illustrated. But none of that felt right; we didn't want you to pay for content. And I know this is not your problem. It's mine. Entirely. But I've always been open with you--in my blog, my posts, and my book. We want you to stay with us and to support us so we can keep bringing quality, well-tested recipes and superb writing to you. Until I can find a workable alternative to asking you to kindly whitelist our site, I’ll have to keep it in place. I hope it doesn't cause you to leave us--we work hard to keep you satisfied and well feed, with words and food. HOW TO WHITE LIST LEITE'S CULINARIA Some folks are under the impression that to visit us they have to completely disable their ad blocker for the entire Internet. That's incorrect. You can whitelist us only--basically telling your ad blocker not to block ads when visiting just our site. It's straightforward. Here's now. Go to Leite's Culinaria and click this button when you see it. (This will appear only if you have an ad blocker turned on.) Next, you'll see the below page. It instructs you how to WHITE LIST Leite's Culinaria for AdBlock Plus, Adblock, and Unblock Origin for the four major browsers. Once done, you will still be able to browse the entire Internet without seeing ads, except when you visit us! My sincerest, And remember, because you're a bona fide subscriber, you're automatically entered to win a mystery cookbook each month.
