[ {NAME} – Our latest audit made the Newsday front cover! [ [READ THE ARTICLE]( We recently completed an audit of the county’s Industrial Development Agency (IDA), and found that the county paid over $550,000 to a consultant for work that was never completed. More details are below! Our audit of the IDA was about two big priorities: - Making sure residents are getting the return on investment on IDA projects in terms of job creation and economic growth that increases the size of our tax base and ultimately keeps our taxes down. - Making sure this process is transparent and data-driven so that an informed public has all the information about the cost and benefits for communities before decisions are made. The current administration at the IDA is taking our audit recommendations as a roadmap to reform, holding folks accountable and in some cases now clawing back benefits when companies don’t hit job goals. That accountability is critical for residents and taxpayers. Between 2013 and 2017, Nassau’s Industrial Development Agency (IDA) hired a consultant who was tasked with helping to bring the cybersecurity industry to Nassau. However, after being paid more than $550,000 over five years, no significant results ever materialized. The audit found that there was no indication that the consultant had done any work to persuade business to move to Nassau. And the IDA paid for $375,000 worth of advertising to bring companies here – but surprisingly, the TV ads were overwhelmingly aired only here in Nassau, not in the surrounding area to encourage business development. So, were they really just targeting voters instead of trying to bring business? This audit was complex and took real time to bring to fruition, so you know that we’re energized to share it. We worked diligently to make sure that we turned every stone. That included looking at every invoice and noticing a pattern where the consultant charged for introducing the IDA to a company the consultant was a partner at. While the findings of this audit were shocking and surprising, we will continue comptrollin’ Nassau to ensure that taxpayer dollars are invested in ways that make sense and create jobs for our community. We’re dedicated to saving you money, and we have a ton more to do in 2021.
