Over 2020, our audits have been making the news! [ {NAME} - During 2020, our audits made the news! [ This past year, the team at the Comptroller’s Office did great work, releasing impactful audits and key financial analysis reports because even though 2020 was anything but ordinary, we made sure we were serving the people of Nassau county. In June we released a sales tax analysis that gave Nassau County a first glimpse of the potential impacts of COVID-19 on our economy. Specifically, a grim sales tax forecast. Here at the Comptroller’s office we work hard to ensure that when taxpayer money is being used to fund programs, it’s going to good use. That’s why our second Newsday cover was about our audit of the mismanagement of funds by the Friends of Nassau County Recreation organization. We found that $40,000 of Friends’ funds were previously improperly spent on staff and staff parties, federal income tax documents were not filed or filed incompletely for multiple years, and that taxpayer money was used for a County vendor’s wedding — all of which are unacceptable. Lastly, in one of our most recent audits, we dug deep into Nassau’s Industrial Development Agency (IDA). They had hired a consultant who was tasked with helping to bring the cybersecurity industry to Nassau. However, after being paid more than $550,000 over five years, no significant results ever materialized. While these articles were certainly newsworthy, it also shows us just how hard Jack has been working for the people of Nassau county and holding those who misuse money accountable. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
