In 1976, Black History Month was officially recognized by the federal government, though it has been celebrated in many areas of the country since 1915. [ {NAME}, In 1976, Black History Month was officially recognized by the federal government, though it has been celebrated in many areas of the country since 1915. While February is designated as Black History Month, we cannot forget that Black history should be celebrated year-round - as it is American history. That’s why today, as we celebrate Black History Month, it’s also important to highlight the challenges our communities face when it comes to achieving full equity. Last February we released a report on Black Economic Equity in Nassau County. The report showed that there was: - A $24 billion gap in Long Island’s economy because of racial inequality, - A $4.5 billion gap on aggregate Black income on Long Island, - An over 30% national gap between Black and white homeownership, - And a 27.4% home mortgage denial rate for Black homebuyers. [READ THE REPORT]( And what’s more concerning is that this report was done before the COVID-19 pandemic, which has only aggravated equity nationwide. Here at the Comptroller's office, we have continued to put out reports and audits to make sure that these numbers are receiving the attention they deserve. Because, when we have equity, everyone wins. If Nassau County is able to close the equity divide, our economy would be $24 billion stronger! {NAME}, as we begin Black History Month, I encourage you to learn more about Black history in America and do what you can to help make this county and country a more equitable place.
