They came to the U.S. seeking protection and would ordinarily be released while awaiting their hearings. Yet new Trump-era policies mean they languish in jail. Challenging chokehold of Syracuse teen: We demanded changes to the Syracuse Police Department’s dangerous use-of-force policy on behalf of a 14-year-old student who police put in a life-threatening chokehold. [Watch our video about his story](. Fighting racial discrimination in the NYPD: For years the NYPD denied promotions to qualified and accomplished black detectives because of their race. These detectives participated in the clean up and investigation of the September 11 attacks. We sued over this pervasive discrimination within the NYPD Intelligence Division.
