Make voting simpler in New York [ACLU of New York]( [Facebook]( [Twitter]( MAKE EARLY VOTING A REALITY IN NY Demand lawmakers pass and fund early voting [TAKE ACTION]( Share this: [Facebook share sidebox]( [Twitter share sidebox]( [Email share]( If you forward, the links will open to a page with your personal information. Dear {NAME}, Voting should be straightforward, but New York makes it much too hard. New Yorkers face arbitrary registration deadlines, faraway polls and long lines just to cast a ballot. One of the top reasons residents say they don’t vote is because they can’t find the time. In recent elections, red tape has caused dismal voter registration and turnout across the state. Just last year New York had the eighth worst turnout in the country. Nothing should keep New Yorkers from exercising their fundamental right to vote – After all, voting is the right we exercise to protect all other rights. [TAKE ACTION: Tell lawmakers to make voting more accessible by passing early voting legislation](. In the next couple weeks, Albany lawmakers will hammer out our state budget. That gives them an important opportunity to modernize New York’s antiquated voting laws by including legislation to make early voting a reality. This long overdue reform would allow voters to cast their ballot 12 days ahead of elections, affording them the flexibility to visit polling sites at their convenience. That means they could manage work obligations, illness, transportation, disability and unexpected obstacles to the polls. President Trump has made it clear he wants to limit access to the ballot, going so far as to turn his lies about his election margin into a dangerous, bogus and now disbanded voter fraud commission. In the face of this, New York should be standing up to Trump and leading by example. Yet when it comes to early voting, our state is way, way behind – 37 states and D.C. allow early voting, but not New York. [Tell Governor Cuomo and lawmakers in Albany to pass and fund statewide early voting in 2018](. In New York, there should be no barriers to democracy.
