Dear {NAME}, Albany budget negotiations may sound like a snooze, but this year all New Yorkers need to wake up. That’s because lawmakers are considering three critical statewide reforms that would make New York more just, democratic and equal. I wrote you about each of these recently, but now we only have a few days left to make a difference. We need your help to make sure these proposals don’t get sidelined or watered-down in Albany horse-trading. ACT NOW – [Tell lawmakers the final state budget agreement must include comprehensive bail reform, early voting and secure birth control access](JF9aDWBtTEWOiaaaaHH0tBNLPT-iaa?n=7_v8uE29~amp;X=zlomzlgghUrX2ct38~25y6asUof.iis~amp;f=p~amp;r=). It’s rare that this annual Albany ritual would provide a pathway to progress on so many policies that strengthen New Yorkers’ rights. Not so this year. You can take action now to ensure New Yorkers win: - Bail reform. Tens of thousands of New Yorkers who are presumed innocent are stuck behind bars awaiting trial – pulled away from their work and their families – because they can’t afford to pay bail. - Early voting. New Yorkers face arbitrary registration deadlines, faraway polls and long lines just to cast a ballot. Early voting will help thousands of people reclaim their say in our democracy. - Secure contraceptive coverage. Birth control is a critical tool for women to protect their health, to pursue their education and to ensure their economic wellbeing, yet it remains unaffordable and inaccessible for many New Yorkers. In the next few days lawmakers will wrap their negotiations. We cannot let this opportunity slip away – not with the relentless attempts by the Trump administration to push a regressive “law and order” agenda, undermine access to the ballot and strip away reproductive rights. Thank you for all you do.
