{NAME}, Yesterday I took part in a pro-reproductive rights rally in front of Chico City Hall. If you read the Chico Enterprise-Record, you’ll see me holding a sign on the front page picture. I also got a lot of pictures with supporters, many of whom were Chico State students afraid that they would soon lose the right to control their own body. Here’s a picture of me with a few of them. While I was at the protest, Rep. LaMalfa was crafting a press release that defended the Supreme Court decision to deny women choice over their own bodies. Unfortunately, protests will probably not be enough to protect our constitutional rights. The Republican Supreme Court does not care what the people of America think anymore than they care about judicial precedent. They are unaccountable ideologues. Instead, we need to fight for our rights at the ballot box. Our long-term goals should be a Constitutional Amendment codifying an explicit right to privacy, in addition to a less partisan Supreme Court. But that doesn’t mean that we should give up the short-game. Here’s an idea: In Congress, I would sponsor legislation prohibiting the Department of Defense from stationing personnel in states that restrict access to abortion before viability. If Texas, or Georgia, or Florida want to outlaw abortions, then the military should close every single base in those states and move those personnel to stations where their reproductive rights are respected. Our servicemembers and their families are already sacrificing many of their personal freedoms by defending our country. They do not get to pick where they are posted and they may have very good reasons to put off having children. I love America, I love the military, and it would be an honor to protect the reproductive rights of servicemembers as a Congressman. I know that times are tough, but the night is always darkest before dawn. Last night we saw the cost of defeat – we need to do everything we can to win in November.
