{NAME}, As we celebrate the nomination of Ketanji Jackson to the Supreme Court, we do so against the backdrop of a Republican-led crusade against women’s reproductive freedoms at the state level. Republicans in Texas started the assault by passing a near 90% ban on abortions and encouraged Texans to spy on one another to enforce it. This week in Oklahoma, Republicans criminalized all abortions and threatened women who receive one with ten years in prison. In Missouri, they want to prosecute women who travel out of state for an abortion -- functionally treating their wombs as property of the state. Gutting choice has been a long-term GOP objective, but it has picked up steam after the far-right packed the Supreme Court with its Federalist Society lackeys. Needless to say, Jackson’s nomination is a welcome sight -- despite the fact that progressive-leaning justices are still in the minority. As a Roman Catholic, I think abortion is wrong. But I recognize that even as my religion shapes my moral beliefs, I do not want to live in a country with religious laws. Our secular state is built on respecting the rights and beliefs of others -- not on imposing religious views on the rest of the country. [Today we celebrate Judge Jackson's nomination, but we cannot stop fighting for control of Congress so we can protect the rights of all Americans. For us, that means stepping up against right-wing extremists like Doug LaMalfa in CA-01.
