{NAME}, Our last “LaMalfa Takedown” a few weeks ago was very well received, so we’ll continue the tradition going forward. I’ll try to add some more context to LaMalfa’s arguments as well since not everyone who gets my emails gets LaMalfa’s newsletter, which can understandably be a bit confusing. LaMalfa devotes most of his email to complaining about water and claiming that the state is wasting it. There are a few issues here: First, it’s blatant selfishness. LaMalfa is a huge beneficiary of state water subsidies in addition to millions in direct federal subsidies. In LaMalfa’s mind, the government exists to make him and his farming buddies richer – and an action that does not make him better off is “wasteful tyranny”. Second, the reason our reservoirs are dangerously low on water is because of CLIMATE CHANGE, which LaMalfa does not believe in. We haven’t had serious rain since December, a false Spring and subsequent frost decimated the almond crop, and the New York Times is running articles on how we are in a “1200-year drought”. LaMalfa refuses to recognize the reality of climate change – because he refers to put politics over facts. Third, LaMalfa took the opportunity to brag about cornering President Biden after the State of the Union to ask for money for Sites reservoir. So now we have our congressman, who voted against the infrastructure bill and against certifying Biden’s election, begging Biden for infrastructure spending. LaMalfa’s section on the Central Arizona Project -- which redirects Colorado River water to Phoenix -- has a special relevance to me. My great-uncle, Wes Steiner, was the first Director of the Arizona Department of Water Resources and he championed water infrastructure as an alternative to groundwater overuse -- which had become a huge problem by the mid-1970’s in Arizona. I’m incredibly proud of Uncle Wes’s work. I wish LaMalfa knew the whole story of the Central Arizona Project -- which saw tough compromises between agricultural, urban, and mining interests -- but LaMalfa just assumes that every water project is built BY taxpayers FOR big farmers. The section on fire management isn’t terrible, but it’s too little, too late. LaMalfa has had 10 years in Congress to push for meaningful reforms to the U.S. Forest Service: he’s done nothing useful. Pretty words can’t coverup a terrible record. LaMalfa’s final section, on why Ukraine means we need to “drill baby, drill” is despicable. He doesn’t even devote a sentence to Ukrainian civilians dying because of Putin’s decision to invade. Trump is calling Putin a “genius” and sycophants like LaMalfa have decided to make Ukraine into an oil industry talking point. It’s gross. LaMalfa’s newsletters prove that our congressman cares only about himself. Everything out of his mouth is either an anti-Biden talking point or a selfish demand for another government subsidy.
