{NAME}, Many of you get my opponent Doug LaMalfa's e-Newsletter, like the one he sent out yesterday. Some of you ask me what I have to say about them. That’s a fair question so, going forward, I'll be responding to them. If you don't get LaMalfa's e-Newsletter, well, consider yourself lucky -- sometimes they can be masterpieces of mediocrity This month's Newsletter begins well. LaMalfa takes a strong stance in favor of supporting the Ukrainians in their conflict against Russia. Credit where credit is due! Yes: the Ukrainians are the good guys and the Russians are the bad guys. It's crazy that we need to compliment LaMalfa for this stance, but in the modern GOP this opposition to Putin’s Russia is not a given. Doug LaMalfa claiming that he “told Biden to implement tough sanctions to deter Russia" reveals our congressman as the ineffectual, Monday-morning quarterback he is. He has never served in the military or read a book on strategic deterrence, and has no idea what he’s talking about. He’s just a chicken-hawk trying to look tough. He sounds like an old, overweight couch potato talking about the "right" football play to make. I'm pretty sure President Biden doesn't need, or want, advice on Ukraine from someone like LaMalfa. The US will continue to provide lethal aid, logistics support, and intelligence, all while building an international coalition to destroy Russia's economy and force them to pull back their forces. Let’s not forget, LaMalfa voted against impeaching Donald Trump for blackmailing Ukraine to get dirt on Biden. After acquittal, Trump withheld $400 million in aid to Ukraine. LaMalfa has plenty of criticism for Biden "not being tough enough" but conveniently forgets the pro-Putin placaters and authoritarian wannabes in the Republican Party and on Fox News. Fact: you don't support Ukraine if you’re afraid to criticize the Putin-appeasers on your own side. LaMalfa is using the Ukraine crisis as a weapon against Biden, just as Trump tried to use the Ukrainian justice system against Biden. The modern GOP is full of hypocrites like LaMalfa. They are not pro-Ukraine and they are not pro-democracy. They are anti-Biden. They have nothing to offer but criticism, even in a crisis. The email gets worse. LaMalfa pivots from talking about a war in Ukraine with dead bodies on the ground to waxing poetic about the anti-vax trucker "Freedom Convoy." First off, LaMalfa has his convoys confused. The "Freedom Convoy" disbanded after only one day because only five trucks showed up. He is instead talking about the "People's Convoy," which is still puttering along towards DC as a puny parade of pick-ups and SUVs. Talk about lacking a sense of perspective! Ukrainian civilians are being killed by Russian artillery and Doug is hyping a convoy of complainers. It's sad. LaMalfa then complains about Canada "attacking freedom of speech". In fact, Canada was remarkably tolerant of its anti-vax protest. Ultimately though, the Canadian truckers were arrested or cited after refusing to disperse. Civilized countries do not allow protesters to "occupy" major urban centers. This is true whether they are from the far-left as in Portland, or from the far right as in Ottawa. LaMalfa seems to think that "free speech" means "my side gets to do whatever they want". That is not, in fact, how our right to free speech works. LaMalfa also just can’t stop talking about mask mandates in school. He never took a stand on the Shasta Board of Supervisors recall -- claiming it wasn't his place to step into local debates. Weird then that he seems so ready to criticize the masking decisions of our elected school boards. Maybe he just gets all his talking points from Fox and Fox didn't cover the Shasta recall? Either way, it's just another example of LaMalfa pandering to a base that terrifies him but being too scared to be a real leader in the district. The Army has a term for officers like this: it’s called “following from the front.” It’s not a compliment. [That's it for the LaMalfa newsletter recap.
