It’s dumb, but it’s just as applicable today. The latest inflation report is out. Once again, it’s up. Once again, so many are [unnecessarily surprised.]( Once again, it’s being described as: “hot,” “persistent,” and “stubborn.” And, once again, the force propelling high CPI numbers is not showing any weakness at all. Shelter makes up 33% of the CPI. This month the official CPI put shelter’s increase at 0.4% for the month and 5.7% for the year. That’s almost double the overall rate of inflation. So if you reduced the rate of shelter increases, you’d be much closer to 2% CPI than the near 4% current rate. But this chart shows that’s not going to happen anytime soon: You can fool around with interest rates, but supply and demand will win out.
