The easiest way to bring down inflation isn’t happening (the opposite is)

April 10, 2024 Hello , “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again.” That’s one of former President George W. Bush’s most memorable quotes. It’s dumb, but it’s just as applicable today. The latest inflation report is out. Once again, it’s up. Once again, so many are [unnecessarily surprised.]( Once again, it’s being described as: “hot,” “persistent,” and “stubborn.” And, once again, the force propelling high CPI numbers is not showing any weakness at all. Shelter makes up 33% of the CPI. This month the official CPI put shelter’s increase at 0.4% for the month and 5.7% for the year. That’s almost double the overall rate of inflation. So if you reduced the rate of shelter increases, you’d be much closer to 2% CPI than the near 4% current rate. But this chart shows that’s not going to happen anytime soon: You can fool around with interest rates, but supply and demand will win out.
