May 29th, 2024 Hello , This could be a monster trade. But few will see it coming because they’re thinking too rationally. Here’s the set-up. Solar is roaring back to life. We know solar has its problems - dubious economics, questionable energy savings, and massive subsidies required. But none of that has stopped solar. In fact, solar panel production has been ratcheted up to an extremely high level and it's going to stay there. Here’s a chart of annual solar installations worldwide: Now, this isn’t going to rescue the solar industry or turn those solar dog stocks around. Frankly, if they aren’t doing well now, they never will. Instead, the solar surge is helping to drive a run on silver and we’ve finally hit a turning point. Every solar panel needs a lot of silver. Depending on the type, a solar panel uses 10 to 25 grams per panel (that’s almost an ounce!). That was fine a decade ago when solar was much smaller and consumed 2% of global silver production. It’s all changed after the recent solar surge. Last year solar’s silver consumption passed 16% of global production and it could be 20% next year. And, based on the chart above, it’s going to stay at that 20% level. Silver production, meanwhile, hasn’t kept up at all. TD Securities sees a potential scenario where above-ground silver supplies run out in the next “12 to 24 months.” Silver prices are already at 13-year highs, but if this is the case, there could be many more new highs ahead.
