Big win on fortifying Brady Background Checks with passage of HR8 and HR1112 [This Week in Brady News]( We Have a New Name and a New Website It’s a new era for the oldest and boldest gun violence prevention group in the country. As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Brady Bill, we’re proud and excited to announce a new name and focus — to unite Americans across all spectrums against gun violence as Brady. We honor the spirit and accomplishments of Jim and Sarah Brady, the trailblazing gun violence prevention advocates whose name we bear. Our new logo represents the cross-aisle work that Jim and Sarah did — the red and blue uniting as purple. Political pragmatists that they were, Jim and Sarah knew that solutions could only be achieved when we take action and find middle ground. [Read more on our blog — and then take a tour of our website.]( [Watch Our New Video]( --------------------------------------------------------------- We Made History in Advancing Two Bills to Prevent Gun Violence In a historic set of votes, the House of Representatives passed two bills that mark the strongest legislative effort to prevent gun violence in a generation. H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, and H.R. 1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019, together will strengthen the Brady Background Check system and make it significantly more difficult for individuals prohibited under federal law from owning guns to obtain them. Brady is taking the energy from the passage of these bills to the Senate! We’re committed to seeing S. 42 make its way through the Senate as a clean bill, without the inclusion of dangerous gun lobby language or amendments meant only to divide our community and distract from the goal of reduced gun violence. Read our press releases on [H.R. 8]( and [H.R. 1112](. [Send a message to your senators urging them to to vote YES to S.42.]( --------------------------------------------------------------- We Held Our First Team ENOUGH Youth Summit On the anniversary weekend of the Parkland shootings, our Team ENOUGH members from all over the country convened in San Diego for a summit focused on building power, youth organizing, and gun violence prevention. We joined the town hall put on by Team ENOUGH San Diego and mapped action steps on how to build nonpartisan solutions and create change locally. We closed the summit with a sunset walk along the beach, symbolic of our healing as survivors and activists in the movement to end gun violence. [Check out the photo album if you want to feel inspired.]( [Team Enough ] --------------------------------------------------------------- Brady Defends Assault Weapon Ban in Court On Wednesday, February 20, Brady filed an amicus brief in defense of the Cook County, IL, ban on assault weapons in the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Brady’s brief argues that because assault weapons are not protected by the Second Amendment, the Court should reject a lawsuit seeking to strike down the ban. We also argue that the ban is an important, constitutional measure to protect public safety and prevent mass shootings. Yewman, a graduate of Columbine High School, explores a number of common gun violence situations, including suicide, accidental child shootings, street crimes, and the widespread fear of a home invasion. Screenings will be held throughout March and April at festivals throughout the country. [Learn more — and find or request a screening near you.]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Bustle is Writing about the End Family Fire Program! Through our relationship with the Ad Council and Gun Safety Alliance, End Family Fire has partnered with Bustle to produce a series of articles throughout the year. The first article in the series went live yesterday explains actions people can take to prevent family fire tragedies. On August 10th, 1999, a white supremacist stormed a day camp at the Jewish Community Center in Granada Hills, CA, firing 70 shots and wounding five people, including three children. Outraged, Donna Dees-Thomases applied for a permit to march on Washington, D.C., on Mother’s Day, 2000. She called it “The Million Mom March.” In less than a month, Donna and six friends created the foundation of what would become the largest, most publicized gun violence prevention event in American history until the March for Our Lives. Their mission: to find a few good moms in each of the 435 congressional districts over the next nine months. Their rallying cry: “Looking for a Few Good Moms to Mobilize for Common Sense Gun Laws.” The Million Mom March would go on to become the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence united with the Million Mom March. In the 19 years since the march, our moms stood sentry, dedicating millions of hours to educating the public and lobbying our leaders. We stand on the shoulders of all those moms who have dedicated their lives to making the world a safer place. They are the cornerstone of this movement and for that reason, the Million Mom March is our GVP Hero of the Week. --------------------------------------------------------------- Brady in the News: Must-Reads [Brady gun control group gets rebranding]( The Hill [House passage of gun safety bills reflects political shift]( AP [Kerr wears ‘Take Action Not Sides’ shirt on anniversary of Brady Bill]( USA Today [House sends guns background check bill to the Senate with bipartisan support]( CNN [How So Many Violent Felons Are Allowed to Keep Their Illegal Guns]( New York Times --------------------------------------------------------------- Brady Quote of the Week [Retweet this quoute]( "The most difficult the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.
