Brady fights for Sutherland Springs victims and survivors in court. [Legal Update]( Dear {NAME}, With the ever-increasing number of mass shootings, the locations are often quickly forgotten. But not by Brady. My team and I are battling on the frontlines, in courtrooms across the country, fighting to stop gun violence and help victims long after media attention has moved on to the latest incident. As a Brady supporter, I wanted to share with you details of our most recent case. November 5, 2017, a lone gunman opened fire at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, TX. In a community of 500, 26 were killed, another 20 injured, and a town forever changed. Parents were killed shielding children, many of whom also died that day. Some families suffered enormous losses, and Sutherland Springs suffered with them. This Thursday, my colleague Erin Davis and I stood before a judge in San Antonio with our partners from several Texas law firms, while I argued on behalf of the victims and survivors s of the largest mass shooting in Texas history and the fifth largest in American history. Our clients sued Academy Sports + Outdoors, alleging that they illegally sold a Ruger AR-556 with a 30-round magazine to the killer. At the time of the sale, the killer identified himself as a Colorado resident, so federal law required Academy to comply with the law of Colorado as well as Texas. Colorado bans magazines over 15 rounds, so we claim that Academy should NOT have sold the gun used to commit the massacre at the Sutherland Springs church. Our message is simple: These families deserve their day in court. They have a right to prove their case. Academy Sports and their lawyer argued that the sale of the weapon was lawful and that the federal Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act gives gun dealers broad immunity that takes away the victims’ rights to bring otherwise-valid legal claims. The judge could issue a decision as soon as next Monday. A decision in favor of the victims and survivors will send a message to the gun industry to sell guns safely and responsibly, or else Brady will hold them accountable for the consequences! At Brady, we honor with action! With thanks for your support, Jon Lowy VP, Litigation P.S. Brady represents victims and survivors completely free of charge. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
