There are now at least 160 positive cases of COVID-19 in my home state of Texas, 3 people have died, and Governor Abbott has activated the Texas National Guard to help handle this developing crisis. I have heard from folks who are worried about passing the virus on to vulnerable friends and family members. I have heard from parents struggling to find childcare, suddenly-unemployed workers wondering how they’re going to pay for rent and groceries, and people experiencing homelessness who have nowhere to go. Then, on Friday, we passed a second relief package which includes paid leave, expanded food assistance, extended unemployment insurance, and free coverage for COVID-19 testing.
