/tSwQdY0ePqr-MwcapQ5f4Mt_71jYoZiO9Ldr9bx0qn4= {NAME}, Two years ago today, we witnessed the deadliest high school shooting in our country’s history in Parkland, Florida. A lone gunman armed with a semi-automatic weapon killed 17 people and injured 17 others in just 6 minutes. What set the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School apart from others was the response from students. They mourned -- and then they marched. They demanded that we take their grief to heart, that we act to prevent more tragedies and to keep children safe at school. The Parkland shooter should not have been legally able to purchase a weapon capable of killing so many in just minutes. According to published reports, his repeated threats, behavioral issues, and violent social media posts were known to authorities -- but he did not receive the help he needed, and his classmates paid the price. {NAME}, thoughts and prayers are not enough. The next generation is calling on us to take action, and we have not done them justice. It’s time to heed their call -- to institute universal background checks and mandatory waiting periods, to prevent known violent individuals from accessing firearms, and to take weapons of war off our streets. I am proud and grateful to stand with you in this fight, and I look forward to a better tomorrow.
