On January 6, 2021, we saw the culmination of decades of violence, white supremacy, conspiratorial thinking, xenophobia, and disinformation boil over in a violent insurrection at the people’s house here in Washington, DC. As we enter a year in which Republicans take back the House, we’ll have new challenges ahead of us, but we know that together, we can overcome anything. In marking this stoic anniversary, we must redouble our efforts to ensure racist voter suppression laws are stopped. We must also expand access to the ballot and do so much more to ensure fairness and equity throughout our electoral process. But more so, I’m also committed to dismantling the systems that got us here – white supremacy, growing fascist extremism, anti-semitism, violent misogyny, and xenophobia must be challenged swiftly and definitively. You and I both know that this was not a one-time problem. We need fundamental changes to heal our country’s ills, and my new position in the Congressional Black Caucus leadership gives me the opportunity to uplift the next generation of Black leaders who are dedicated to fundamentally challenging these toxic systems. The young people and freshmen Congressmen in this Congress give me so much hope that together, we’ll be able to dismantle the systems that led to the deadly January 6th attack on our Capitol two years ago today. And together, we can continue advocating for and imagining a better future. –Yvette D. Clarke Stay up to date with Yvette on social media!
