I wanted to email you and share some reflections I’ve had on the recent news{NAME}, Right now, Democrats are fighting to stand up to the crisis of gun violence while Republicans do whatever they can to stop our progress and derail talks. I was proud to help pass the Protecting Our Kids Act this week, raising the minimum age of purchasing assault rifles to 21, barring the sale of large-capacity magazines and ensuring safe gun storage. {NAME}, I am tired of the excuses. I am tired of hearing from parents afraid to send their children to school – and Black parents doubly afraid that increased policing will never be an equitable answer for their children. But we knew the GOP was in the pockets of the NRA from the start. However, this is yet another example of how the Republican party has come to become a shield for violent extremists and radicalism across the country. As I write this, we’re also awaiting SCOTUS’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, sending abortion access back to the States. Here in New York, families seeking reproductive health care will still continue to have access to the services they need, but I am furious for all the Black, Brown, young, and poor communities – particularly across the south – who will be hurt hardest by this decision. In a country in which the Black maternal mortality rate is two to three times that of white women, we know that access to abortion is also a form of racial justice. In a country in which single mothers and working families struggle to feed their babies with atrophying public services, we know that access to abortion is a class issue as well. It can be exhausting, I know. However, there is always hope. I’m proud to be a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Progressive Caucus and we will never stop fighting for what’s best for our communities. There are always opportunities to grow and connect and build power from the community, up. One such opportunity is happening this Saturday. I hope to see you all at this weekend’s March for Our Lives, which is returning to New York, D.C., and hundreds of cities across the country. Rise up with me and activists across the country to demand action on gun violence. [Today, I’m asking my supporters to make a split donation between my re-election campaign and the March for Our Lives to support this ongoing fight to end gun violence once and for all.]( [DONATE]( Thanks for your support, – Yvette D.
