One year without Roe v. Wade

A Democratic Congress is the key to protecting reproductive freedom {NAME} – One year ago today, the US Supreme Court, bought by radical right-wing forces and committed to the undermining of personal freedom, overturned Roe v. Wade. Arkansas wasted no time and enacted one of the most extreme bans on abortion in the country, and the consequences have been deadly. My wife, who is an emergency room physician, has seen the fallout firsthand. Today, if a woman in Little Rock needs an abortion, she will need to travel around 400 miles to reach the nearest medium-sized city in a state where abortion is still legal (for now). But if Republicans in Congress get their way and pass a national abortion ban, no state is safe. It can be a matter of life or death for a woman. Extreme bans like the one here in Arkansas tie the hands of doctors and healthcare providers, threatening them with 10 years in prison and a $100,000 fine if they perform an abortion – even one they think medically necessary – that doesn’t fit these right-wing lawmakers’ definition of an “exception.” The past year has been scary. All around the country women have come forward with their stories about how these extreme bans have put their lives at risk when they miscarried or their pregnancy became life threatening. Maternal mortality was already a national crisis – particularly for Black women, for whom the risk of dying in childbirth is over 3 times higher than the national average. Today, 64% of OBGYNs say that the post-Roe abortion bans have increased maternal mortality rates. That is why we continue fighting for reproductive justice. To do that, we must take back Congress for Democrats and make reproductive rights the law of the land. The key to protecting these personal freedoms is to elect representatives to Congress who will stand up for women and others whose rights are being trampled by extremist state legislatures and governors, like those we have in Arkansas.
