Many more people remain missing. Authorities rescued just over 100 people after the overloaded vessel sank. The coast guard said the boat had [declined assistance]( that was offered. Cargo ships in the area have given the rescued migrants food and water. Many refugees and migrants from the Middle East, Asia and Africa travel through Greece to reach other European Union countries. Turkey Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan says he’s willing to accept an economic turnaround under newly appointed finance minister Mehmet Simsek. Economists say Simsek could turn the tide in Turkey’s [cost-of-living crisis](. It means loosening years of heavy state control over the central bank and a shift from the refusal to raise interest rates, despite soaring inflation. The Turkish lira saw its value against the dollar [drop by some 80%]( in the last five years. Poland Abortion rights protests have been planned for Wednesday in Poland following the [death of Dorota Lalik]( last month. She died of sepsis in her fifth month of pregnancy. Polish authorities ruled that Lalik’s death was a result of her rights being violated by medical professionals in charge of her case and that she was not told that her chances of maintaining the pregnancy were limited. Poland’s [restrictive abortion laws]( do not permit abortions in cases of severe fetal deformities, but they do allow individuals to terminate pregnancies whose life or health is threatened. --------------------------------------------------------------- From The World [Shelters for migrants in Mexico City overwhelmed as US changes its asylum rules]( [The CAFEMIN shelter in Mexico City is designed for 80 people, but it's currently hosting 500, with most of them sleeping on gym mats in the shelter's basketball court.]( Credit: Manuel Rueda/The World Migrants from many countries were previously able to cross the US border on foot and turn themselves in to officials to begin asylum proceedings. But since May 12, it's become much harder, and those turned down are banned from reentering the US for the next five years. Many are now trying to [secure appointments]( through a US government app, but spaces are limited. [Ukrainian parents take risky trips to Russia to retrieve their deported children]( [A group of mothers and guardians meet to discuss an upcoming trip to Russia and occupied parts of Ukraine to retrieve their missing children.]( Credit: Daniel Ofman/The World Ukrainian authorities say at least 19,000 children have been [transferred to Russia]( from occupied territories during the war. Some Ukrainian families have taken matters into their own hands, taking risky trips to Russia to try to bring their children back home. --------------------------------------------------------------- Double take Animal activists are pushing for the relocation of a [giraffe named Benito]( from a park in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juárez. The city’s arid climate is inhospitable for giraffes, and Benito’s enclosure lacks adequate trees necessary to keep him fed and sheltered from the sun. The park is also not equipped to protect him in the winter from cold temperatures. Since his arrival, monthly visits to the park have risen by about 60,000. Park officials say they plan to add infrastructure like a heated winter house, but advocates still insist that he be sent to an animal sanctuary. 🦒 [Benito the giraffe looks out from his enclosure at the city-run Central Park in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, June 13, 2023.] Credit: Christian Chavez/AP In case you missed it on The World --------------------------------------------------------------- Don't forget to subscribe to The World's Latest Edition podcast using your favorite podcast player: [RadioPublic](, [Apple Podcasts](, [Stitcher](, [Soundcloud](, [RSS]( [The World logo]( [The World on Facebook]( [The World's Twitter account]( [Donate]( | [Forward to a friend]( | [Subscribe]( | [Edit your subscription]( | [Unsubscribe]( | [View in your browser]( Top of the World is written weekday mornings by the team at [The World](.
