He is the first current or former president in US history to be charged by the justice department with a crime. Trump is expected to plead not guilty. Miami police are also preparing for the [possibility of thousands of protesters]( outside the federal courthouse. Syria A US military helicopter that crashed in northeast Syria on Monday has injured 22 US service members. The cause of the crash is under investigation, though the military reported [“no enemy fire”]( at the time of the incident. US troops have been in Syria since 2015 to counter activity by Iranian-supported militias and ISIS amid the country's ongoing civil war. There are at least [900 American forces]( located in the country, not including additional military contractors. Germany The [Air Defender 2023 exercise](, which began on Monday and is set to run through June 23 in Germany, has been billed the biggest such exercise in NATO's history. It’s meant to showcase the alliance's capabilities amid tensions with Russia. Around 10,000 participants and [250 aircraft from 25 nations]( will respond to a simulated attack, with the US alone sending 100 aircraft and 2,000 Air National Guard personnel.
