As wounded people flowed into wards, supplies were running low and doctors, nurses, patients and their relatives were trapped inside for days. People have been unable to leave their homes since Saturday as the two sides engaged in gun battles and bombarded each other with artillery and airstrikes. At least 12 hospitals have had to shut down due to the fighting. More than [180 people have been killed]( and over 1,800 wounded since the fighting erupted. Brazil Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva arrived in Portugal on Friday amid[heightened tensions]( with the European Union. Last weekend, the leader courted controversy when he said that both Ukraine and Russia had decided to go to war, and claimed that the US was âstimulatingâ the fighting. Earlier in the month, he irked Ukraine, the US and the EU by suggesting that Ukraine should cede Crimea, which Russia seized in 2014, to end the current conflict. Lula's trip to Portugal is an opportunity to repair some of the damage these comments caused to Brazil-EU relations. Colombia US President Joe Biden hosted Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Thursday for talks at the White House [amid deep differences on drug policy](. Petro has sharply criticized US-led efforts to prohibit cocaine, saying in a UN speech last year that oil consumption promoted by âglobal powersâ is more deadly than cocaine. Petroâs government has been reluctant to eradicate coca fields planted by small farmers, preferring instead to pursue large-scale drug traffickers. The two leaders tried to keep the focus on [areas of agreement]( during Thursday's talks, including strengthening their democracies. --------------------------------------------------------------- From The World [Archaeologists uncover ancient Moorish waterways to irrigate Granada](

Credit: Eraldo Peres/AP Former President Jair Bolsonaro is back in Brazil after a three-month hiatus in Florida. Allies say heâs [ready to fight]( the new government. But Bolsonaro faces a string of lawsuits that are working against him. âHe obviously has the ability to mobilize perhaps the most radicalized and highly visible sector of the opposition, which is the extreme right that is in the National Congress,â said Marcelo Kunrath, a Brazilian political sociologist at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. "But will he effectively be able to assume a leadership role among his larger base? Thatâs another question." --------------------------------------------------------------- Bright spot Canada Post has [released a unique Eid stamp]( this year that features a 700-year-old bowl from Iran.
