The death toll from Mondayâs massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake in parts of Turkey and Syria has [now surpassed 5,000](, as rescue teams frantically search for survivors. There have also been more than 300 aftershocks. Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said that around 8,000 people have been pulled from the rubble. And President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a state of emergency for three months across the 10 provinces in the earthquake zone. Tens of thousands of people are injured and many remain homeless amid harsh winter weather. Countries from around the world, including the US, are [sending search and rescue teams]( to the devastated areas. Peru
Heavy rains have triggered [mudslides in Peru](, killing at least 36 people. And civil defense officials say that an estimated 630 homes remain unusable, affecting around some 2,000 families. Theyâve also disrupted bridges, irrigation canals and roads. Boeing has announced that it plans to cut around 2,000 jobs in its finance and human resources departments, [outsourcing some of them to India](.
