More than 2,300 people have died, with the death toll continuing to rise. Thousands of others have also been injured. Many people are believed to still be trapped under rubble in collapsed buildings amid bitter winter weather. Meanwhile, the Syrian government is not in control of its quake-stricken areas amid its ongoing civil war. International leaders have [offered condolences and assistance]( to both countries, with Ankara formally requesting help from NATO. Pakistan Former Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf [has died at the age of 79]( in Dubai following a prolonged illness. Pakistani politicians, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, expressed their condolences. Musharraf was living in self-imposed exile in the UAE since 2016. He had seized power from former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif — Shehbaz Sharif’s older brother — in a [military coup in 1999](, and appointed himself as president while remaining head of the army two years later. Musharraf was a key ally of the US in its global war on terror. He remained in power until 2008, and was sentenced to death in absentia for treason in 2019. Haiti The Canadian government has [deployed a military aircraft]( over Haiti to help a "dire security situation" and to help disrupt gang activity. It deployed a Royal Canadian Air Force long-range patrol aircraft after Haiti requested support amid escalating violence. The move came as a surprise for many Haitian civilians.
