Chaudary/AP Pakistan An energy-saving attempt by Pakistan’s government has backfired, leaving around [220 million people]( without electricity across the country. It comes as people are already dealing with fuel shortages during the cold winter months. In the city of Quetta, for example, the outage has affected every aspect of life, including hospitals, markets and households. Energy supplies are now [being partially restored](, but it’s unclear how long the blackout — the most widespread since 2021 — will last. The government decision to reduce energy usage came as the nation’s foreign exchange reserves have dwindled to alarmingly low levels. Estonia-Russia The Russian and Estonian [ambassadors have been told to leave]( each other’s countries in tit-for-tat diplomacy. Estonia recently ordered a reduction in the size of the Russian embassy staff in its capital Tallinn. Moscow then asked Estonia’s ambassador to leave Russia by Feb. 7. And in response, NATO and EU members Estonia and Latvia told their Russian ambassadors to also leave. Margus Laidre is the [first ambassador]( that Russia has expelled since its invasion of Ukraine last February. Somalia The US military says it conducted an airstrike to assist government troops in Somalia, which has [killed around 30 al-Shabab fighters]( near the town of Galcad, about 162 miles northeast of the capital Mogadishu. The US Africa Command said Friday's airstrike came as Somalia’s army was being attacked by more than 100 militants.
