Griner was arrested in February at a Moscow airport when authorities found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil, which is banned in Russia, and then was sentenced in August to nine years in a penal colony on possessing and drug smuggling charges. Washington has maintained that her [detention was “wrongful”]( and politically motivated. Afghanistan A new report by UK-based charity Action on Armed Violence (AOAV) shows that Britain has paid out compensation for the deaths of [64 children in Afghanistan]( by British forces. The death toll is four times higher than the 16 casualties the defense ministry has acknowledged publicly. AOAV says that the UK government paid nearly $2,000 on average in compensation for each child killed between 2006-2014, but also that the death toll could be [even higher](, closer to 135. China Beijing has said at the COP27 summit that it’s willing to help create a [system to compensate]( poorer countries facing losses and damage caused by climate change. China’s climate envoy Xie Zhenhua said his country is in solidarity with nations calling for more action from wealthier countries.
