Some of the victims were as young as two years of age, and were attacked as they slept. Authorities say that the former police officer, identified as 34-year-old Panya Kamrab, killed himself and his family after the attack. [No motive]( has yet been declared. Kamrab had been fired from his position for drug use, and a verdict in his case was scheduled for Friday. A teacher who survived the attack told the media that the attacker used to drop off his own child at the center and had seemed polite. Nobel Prize French author [Annie Ernaux]( has won the Nobel Prize for literature. She is the writer of the books "A Girl's Story" and "The Years." The Swedish Academy cited Ernaux's “courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory” for being selected for the honor. Ernaux writes [novels about daily life in France](, as well as nonfiction. The academy is still trying to contact Ernaux about the award. Last year’s prize went to the Zanzibari-born, UK-based writer Abdulrazak Gurnah. Myanmar A court in military-ruled Myanmar has [sentenced a Japanese journalist]( to 10 years in prison — three years for sedition and seven for violating a law on telecommunications — for filming an anti-government protest in July. Toru Kubota is the [fifth foreign journalist]( to be detained by the junta. The military government has also forcibly shut down at least 12 media outlets in the country, some of which have continued operating without a license, either publishing online or from exile. --------------------------------------------------------------- From The World [Analysts: In the face of a high-skilled labor shortage, the US needs to rely more on immigrants]( [Ugandan refugee Hajarah Nakalyango, 30, is studying to be a registered nurse at Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner, Massachusetts.]( Credit: Kirk Carapezza/The World To meet high-skilled workforce demands in industries such as health care and IT, analysts say that the US will need to [rely more on skilled immigrants](. That’s because the number of college-educated workers is shrinking and baby boomers are retiring quicker than previous estimates have suggested. ['For the Sake of' song becomes anthem for protests in Iran]( [Music video of "Bareye"]( Credit: Shervin Hajipour on YouTube Iranian musician Shervin Hajipour has dropped a song called "Bareye," meaning “For the Sake of,” in which he sings of why Iranians are rising up in protest. He has since been arrested and the post was taken down, but Iranians have been [resharing his music]( in hopes of keeping the spotlight on his situation. --------------------------------------------------------------- Double take Waiting for college acceptance is a nerve-wracking experience! To make matters worse, the Northeastern University School of Law in Massachusetts says it [accidentally sent out acceptance emails]( to thousands of current and former applicants, blaming a “technical error” for the glitch. “The School of Law quickly sent a clarifying email explaining the error," the Boston school said. "Individual outreach is also taking place to applicants with concerns." Final admissions decisions will be made later in the academic year. 📝 [Antwan Williams, a senior at Roosevelt High School, fills out a college enrollment application at his school in Washington, Nov. 14, 2013.] Credit: Susan Walsh/AP/File photo In case you missed it on The World --------------------------------------------------------------- Don't forget to subscribe to The World's Latest Edition podcast using your favorite podcast player: [RadioPublic](, [Apple Podcasts](, [Stitcher](, [Soundcloud](, [RSS]( [The World logo]( [The World on Facebook]( [The World's Twitter account]( [Donate]( | [Forward to a friend]( | [Subscribe]( | [Edit your subscription]( | [Unsubscribe]( | [View in your browser]( Top of the World is written weekday mornings by the team at [The World](.
