Clauser and Anton Zeilinger. They worked independently on experiments to help clarify a claim about [quantum entanglement](, concerning the behavior of tiny particles, like electrons, that [behave as one]( and affect each other, even while being vast distances from each other. Their research builds on the work of John Stewart Bell in the 1960s. Quantum theory explains the nature and behavior of matter and energy on the atomic and subatomic levels. Bangladesh Bangladesh faced a power blackout on Tuesday after its [national grid failed](, leaving about 140 million people in the dark, without electricity. The nation was without power, including the capital Dhaka, after transmission failed somewhere in the eastern part of the country. With soaring prices, the government suspended operations of all [diesel-run power plants]( to reduce the cost of imports, creating frequent power shortages, with some garment factories being without power for up to 10 hours a day. Bangladesh is the world’s second-largest garment exporter after China. North Korea North Korea has fired a ballistic missile over Japan for the [first time since 2017](. The missile dropped into the Pacific Ocean, but at a distance of 2,800 miles, that would be far enough to reach the US territory of Guam. The test prompted a joint bombing drill by the US and South Korea. Train services were temporarily suspended in parts of the northeast and residents received phone alerts to go to shelters. The launch was North Korea’s fifth missile test in just over a week. Pyongyang has fired a [record-breaking number]( of ballistic and cruise missiles this year. --------------------------------------------------------------- From The World [‘It will be a challenge’: Lula, Bolsonaro head to runoffs in tight Brazil elections]( [Voters line up to cast their ballot in Sunday's elections in Brazil. Tefft spoke to The World about the war in Ukraine. --------------------------------------------------------------- Double take With Europe facing an energy crisis, some restaurant owners are trying to imagine a future without gas and electricity, in an attempt to prepare for potential shortages. It’s an initiative involving a dozen restaurants, called “Brussels in the Dark.” At the Brasserie Surrealiste, for example, guests dine by candlelight. And there are no ovens, stoves, hot plates, coffee machines or light bulbs. The food consists of cold entrees, with some being only slightly grilled over a charcoal grill. 🕯️ [A group of diners have a drink and candle lit dinner at Brasserie Surrealiste in Brussels, Sept. 28, 2022.] Credit: Olivier Matthys/AP/File photo In case you missed it on The World --------------------------------------------------------------- Don't forget to subscribe to The World's Latest Edition podcast using your favorite podcast player: [RadioPublic](, [Apple Podcasts](, [Stitcher](, [Soundcloud](, [RSS]( [The World logo]( [The World on Facebook]( [The World's Twitter account]( [Donate]( | [Forward to a friend]( | [Subscribe]( | [Edit your subscription]( | [Unsubscribe]( | [View in your browser]( Top of the World is written weekday mornings by the team at [The World](. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
