Xi warned the US not to “[play with fire](.” And Biden underscored that US policy has not changed and that Washington “[strongly opposes unilateral efforts]( to change the status quo or undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait." The conversation comes amid a potential visit by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, which is not being backed by the Biden administration. The two leaders also discussed areas of cooperation, including climate change. It’s their fifth conversation since February 2021, and they’ve discussed arranging their first face-to-face summit. Inflation across Europe is running at its highest level since 1997, when record-keeping for the euro began. United States Health officials in the US say that the country’s monkeypox outbreak can still be stopped, despite rising case numbers and limited vaccine supplies. It comes as San Francisco — a city that reported its first infection on June 3, and now has 281 confirmed cases — became the first major US city to [declare a local health emergency](, and as New York declared the disease an imminent threat to public health. The US has reported more than 4,600 cases across the country. Monkeypox is generally spread through [prolonged skin-to-skin contact or bodily fluids](, and is not airborne like COVID-19 or the flu.
