The vessel, carrying between 60 to 75 migrants, sank northwest of Puerto Rico, and is being called [one of the deadliest voyages]( of the region in recent months. Around 40 people were rescued, but at least a dozen people remain missing. Many of them were Haitians trying to escape surging poverty and violence in their country, which the UN says has seen [a 180% increase in kidnappings and a 17% rise in homicides]( in the past year. Haiti’s situation started exacerbating after the July 7 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse and a 7.2 magnitude earthquake the following month that killed at least 2,000 people. Tanzania Rights groups have accused Tanzanian [police of using violence]( against members of the Masaai Indigenous community. Activists say at least 31 people were severely wounded during an eviction plan last Friday in Loliondo, in the country’s northern district of Ngorongoro. Ten leaders from the group were detained. One police officer was also reportedly killed. Security forces began demarcating a nearly 580-square-mile plot that authorities have allocated to conservation activities, including [making way for a luxury game reserve]( to be operated by a UAE-owned company. And violent clashes broke out after they began forcibly removing people from their ancestral lands in order to move forward with the project. Ukraine The leaders of four EU nations — Italy, Germany, France and Romania — visited Ukraine for talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Thursday. They [vowed to back Kyiv's bid]( to become an official candidate of the bloc. French President Emmanuel Macron also promised Ukraine six more powerful truck-mounted artillery guns, as part of a new round of Western arms pledges against Russia’s invasion and continued fighting in the eastern Donbas region. The US also announced on Wednesday that it will be sending [another $1 billion in military aid]( and heavy weapons. The leaders also visited Irpin, a suburb of the capital, where Russian troops have been accused of perpetrating widespread abuses in the early days of the war. --------------------------------------------------------------- From The World [A spate of dolphin deaths in the Black Sea prompts scientists to search for answers]( [In just the first month of the war, scientists reported more than 80 dolphin deaths on the Turkish coast, according to the Turkish Marine Research Foundation.]( Credit: Durrie Bouscaren/The World Since February, hundreds of dolphins have been found dead off the coasts of Ukraine, Bulgaria and Turkey. Last year, in the Catalonia region of Spain, there were a record 51 blazes in July alone. Shepherds are now training to start “fire flocks" that graze at the edge of forests to [prevent wildfires from spreading]( to populated areas. --------------------------------------------------------------- Voices you don’t hear anywhere else We’re grateful to supporters like Misa in California, who shared: “Wonderful program that makes me feel more connected to communities beyond my own. George Amato, a conservation biologist at the American Museum of Natural History, says that few reintroductions of birds have been successful, and this one is the most ambitious. Conservationists are releasing eight Spix’s macaws from captivity into the wild, and are planning to release 12 more by the end of the year, with more to follow later.
