Five former Guatemalan paramilitaries have been convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to 30 years in prison each for [raping 36 women]( between 1981-1985 during the countryâs decades-long civil war. The women are from the indigenous Achi group of Maya origin, and have spent years seeking justice. Three of the women have passed away since bringing forth the charges, one of them just last week. A UN-backed truth commission has found that [more than 80% of victims]( of atrocities by the military and paramilitaries were indigenous Maya civilians. An estimated 200,000 people were killed and another 45,000 disappeared during Guatemalaâs civil war between 1960-1996. Syria
US-backed forces continue to try and wrest back control of one of the largest prisons holding ISIS fighters in Hasakah, located in the Kurdish region of Syria. Up to [3,500 families have fled]( their homes amid US-led coalition airstrikes and fighting between ISIS and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. ISIS fighters had [attacked the Ghwayran jail]( on Thursday in an attempt to free their members being held there. The SDF said it freed nine of its own troops being held hostage by ISIS members since the prison attack, which has been holding around 3,000 prisoners, most of them captured in the final weeks of regaining the remaining territory held by ISIS. At least eight people were [crushed to death]( outside a stadium in Cameroon, which was hosting the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 50 years. Around 40 others were also injured as thousands of fans tried to gain access. The stadium had a capacity of 60,000 people, and was meant to be only 80% full to keep in line with COVID-19 restrictions, but officials said [about 50,000 people]( tried to attend.
