The move includes two current members of the Ukrainian parliament who belong to the party led by pro-Russian politician Victor Medvedchuk, and comes over growing fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the sanctions are [“separate and distinct”]( from economic sanctions that the US and its European allies are planning to impose on Moscow in the event of an invasion. Blinken is set to meet with Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov for talks in Geneva on Friday. Tonga The first aid flights have arrived in Tonga following the massive undersea volcanic eruption that struck the island nation, cutting communications and leaving ash and debris in its wake. At least three people died in the eruption and the country was [disconnected from the rest of the world]( for five days. The contactless aid flights from Australia and New Zealand brought humanitarian and disaster relief to Fua'amotu International Airport in the capital Nuku'alofa. The assistance is being delivered in a contactless procedure to avoid the spread of COVID-19, which Tonga has had [only one case]( of since the start of the pandemic. More than 80% of Tonga’s population is fully vaccinated. European Union The European Parliament has signed off on a [proposal of new rules]( for US tech giants. It’s an attempt to push the companies to treat rivals fairly and to protect users on their platforms. The Digital Services Act includes requirements to increase the [flagging and removal of illegal content](, such as hate speech or the online sale of unsafe toys or counterfeit goods and services. But lawmakers are battling if the removals would require a court order.
