Is Trump a better friend to Ukraine than Obama was?
When you strip away many of the details of the impeachment case, at the center of it all is this question: What is the US relationship with Ukraine? Deputy White House Counsel Michael Purpura hit on that this week during impeachment trial proceedings arguing that by providing lethal aid to Ukraine, "President Trump has proven himself to be a better friend and ally to Ukraine than his predecessor." Orysia Lutsevych, a research fellow at Chatham House, told The World that arguing that Trump is a "better friend" to Ukraine is like framing it in "[the beauty pageant way](."
"I think what it means to be a friend and ally in international affairs is to act upon common values and common vision for the world we all want to live in," she said. "And I would say that Obama was more, in a way, expressive in standing on the same values with Ukraine â talking a lot about the importance of international law and multinational institutions, providing a lot of support for reforms in Ukraine, paying attention to Ukraine's democracy â than President Trump."
