Also: Mad about delays? Blame air traffic control, United says [The Points Guy]( WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY Jul 9, 2022 WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR FLIGHT IS DELAYED OR CANCELED Happy weekend! I’m [Caroline Tanner, a news reporter here at TPG]( who will be bringing you the top travel stories and trends here in the daily newsletter for the next two weeks. Although it was a short week for most of us here in the U.S., there’s still a lot that happened in the world of travel. For the July Fourth weekend, [airlines managed to avoid a complete meltdown]( but there were still roughly [1,400 canceled flights and more than 18,000 delays](. While this glimmer of good news is likely little solace to those personally affected, it's promising to see that fewer flights were affected this holiday weekend than what we saw around [Memorial Day](. Still, with staffing issues an ongoing problem and more and more travelers venturing out, travel headaches are bound to come up. While we can’t prevent your flight from being delayed or canceled, we do have expert-approved tips for surviving flight delays and cancellations, including [what you can and can't reasonably expect from an airline](. Remember, you are your own best advocate. Although airlines will offer to rebook you and are legally obligated to offer a refund for canceled flights you do not rebook, you can ask for more compensation or assistance, especially if you have [elite status with an airline](. The [credit card you used to book the flight]( may have your back when it comes to additional expenses incurred, too.
