We decided to switch things up in the new year with a redesign and a rethinking of what we send out every week. "P&P discovered me off a mixtape I made back in 2010 and have supported every project I’ve been a part of since then," says Jesse Rutherford. "I still feel like P&P are the best at discovering new artists and have proven themselves time after time. When they hit us about doing this collab it was an automatic yes. I was just stoked to have them approach us and already have great ideas for what the designs would be. I made the Chip Chrome & The Mono-Tones logo and they covered it in chrome. The photo tee was inspired by an old photo of Sid Vicious wearing a Bowie T-shirt." It’s got a different energy with one of DOOM’s aliases, Viktor Vaughn, basically @ing a girl that he caught cheating with DOOM. The ZZ Hill sample is crazy too. "Hoe Cakes" This was a grower for me. The beatboxing stands out at first but then there are so many layers to the lyrics that might fly over your head until you’ve listened to it a few times. I love how smart DOOM is on this song with his double entendres about food and pimping. "Anti-Matter" This is by another of DOOM’s aliases King Geedorah and just has one of the smoothest beats I’ve ever heard so deserves a mention off that alone. "2020 changed so much about how we think and view the world," Lo Village tells us. "The pandemic has shed light on the inequalities that define America and forced us all to sit back and reflect while we’ve been in the house. 'Out the Window' is a vocal expression of how we’ve reflected this year. We started the track with a clip from a speech given by Kwame Ture to the Black Panther Party in 1968. We wanted to parallel the civil unrest of 2020 with 1968 and also pay homage to great black leaders. We also incorporated African drums throughout the track, which perfectly matched the energy we were trying to convey our message through." With three different voices and perspectives, not to mention singing woven in with rapping, Lo Village's sound is hard to pin down—a definite positive in a time of homogenization and instant replication of popular sounds and styles. If they keep releasing music as impactful as "Out The Window," Lo Village will be one of 2021's essential rising artists. The trio's Lost in America EP is set for release on January 22.
