Your weekly dose of music discovery from Pigeons & Planes has landed. It's The Next Wave, the intern

Your weekly dose of music discovery from Pigeons & Planes has landed. [Pigeons Planes ](#) It's The Next Wave, the internet's most unpredictable music discovery-focused newsletter, back at it again! This week's edition was supposed to be an advice column takeover in which the Pigeons & Planes team answers questions from readers, but then we got obsessed with this Terry Presume song so we had to throw that in here. Enjoy, and see you next week. [Image](#) [Kenny Mason](#) Photo by Juan Nieto Terry Presume You know when you hear a song that sounds vaguely familiar and completely alien at the same time? That's Terry Presume's "Did Me Wrong." It starts off like a Southern heartbreak anthem before snapping into a verse that wouldn't be out of place on a Pharcyde album. Separately, both parts are powerful pieces of songwriting and storytelling, but together they form a wonderfully offbeat concoction from an artist who has immediately won over our attention. Terry Presume is a first generation Haitian-American from Naples, Florida and now based in Nashville. He's been writing music since his pre-teen years, and he's building off influences that range from Haitian Kompa music to R&B to Eminem. Beyond that, we don't know too much yet and "Did Me Wrong" is our first real taste, but this song has been on repeat at the P&P headquarters (lol jk what's an office?) and it's a safe bet that you'll be hearing more from us about Terry Presume in the near future. [WATCH THE VIDEO FOR TERRY PRESUME'S "DID ME WRONG"](~/AAJOsQA~/RgRiYtgMP0UBM0TPaHR0cHM6Ly9hcHAuaGl2ZS5jby9lbWFpbC9lbHQvP2hfc2lkPTc1ODQ0ZTcxNDQtNWE4Zjg0ZmRmYmQ5OWI3MDY0OWQwMTE3Jmhhc2g9MWQxNWNmOGMxOGQwOGY2Jm5leHQ9aHR0cHMlM0EvL3lvdXR1LmJlL1dpaGZaLXE3TTBzJTNGdXRtX3NvdXJjZSUzRGhpdmUlMjZ1dG1fbWVkaXVtJTNEZW1haWwlMjZ1dG1fY2FtcGFpZ24lM0RoaXZlX2VtYWlsX2lkXzY1MTU5VwNzcGNCCmB4DVOAYJ_VtYxSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjkyQGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAAAA~~) [Image](#) Dear Pigeons is our new advice column. We put out asks on social media for questions from the readers, and we'll do our best to give sound advice, guidance, or recommendations based on our own experiences. In the future, we'll be bringing in some special guests to help answer questions. Dear Pigeons, What are your thoughts on industry plants? - Anonymous via Instagram Dear Anonymous, The "[industry plant](~/AAJOsQA~/RgRiYtgMP0UBNUT9aHR0cHM6Ly9hcHAuaGl2ZS5jby9lbWFpbC9lbHQvP2hfc2lkPTc1ODQ0ZTcxNDQtNWE4Zjg0ZmRmYmQ5OWI3MDY0OWQwMTE3Jmhhc2g9MWQxNWNmOGMxOGQwOGY2Jm5leHQ9aHR0cHMlM0EvL3d3dy5jb21wbGV4LmNvbS9waWdlb25zLWFuZC1wbGFuZXMvMjAyMC8wMy93aGF0LWlzLWluZHVzdHJ5LXBsYW50LyUzRnV0bV9zb3VyY2UlM0RoaXZlJTI2dXRtX21lZGl1bSUzRGVtYWlsJTI2dXRtX2NhbXBhaWduJTNEaGl2ZV9lbWFpbF9pZF82NTE1OVcDc3BjQgpgeA1TgGCf1bWMUht0cmlzdHJhbWJhbGR3aW45MkBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAAAAA~)" term has come to mean so many different things to different people. Most commonly, we see it used to describe artists who are seemingly just getting their start but already backed by a major label in an obvious way. It can feel awkward, like all of a sudden some unproven artist is getting forced in your face before you get a chance to discover it for yourself, and that can be a turn-off to fans looking for an authentic connection. At the same time, that's a record label's job at the most basic level—to get an artist's music out to potential fans. With all the data available today, major labels rarely take chances on unproven artists. Why take on risk when you can just wait for something to start trending upwards and jump on board right as it's taking off? There's already a lot of pressure on artists to build their own hype, and artist development is practically non-existent in the major label system today. It's simply too easy to let artists figure out how to be social media pros and find their own fans. That way when it's time to release music, half the job is already done. So when a label chooses to invest in an artist during the early stages and believes in something enough to give it a big push when it's most needed, I don't think that's a bad thing. Actually, I'd love to see more of it. Not all great artists are great marketers, and some of them need a support system to reach new ears. How are you going to get mad at a label for doing their job and getting it out to the world? As long as the music is good, then cheers to the label for taking a risk. The real issue here is that when someone calls an artist an industry plant, it's usually just because they think the artist is undeserving. If that's the case, stop throwing around the "industry plant" term and just say you don't like the music. - [Jacob Moore](~/AAJOsQA~/RgRiYtgMP0UBNkTWaHR0cHM6Ly9hcHAuaGl2ZS5jby9lbWFpbC9lbHQvP2hfc2lkPTc1ODQ0ZTcxNDQtNWE4Zjg0ZmRmYmQ5OWI3MDY0OWQwMTE3Jmhhc2g9MWQxNWNmOGMxOGQwOGY2Jm5leHQ9aHR0cHMlM0EvL3R3aXR0ZXIuY29tL0NPTkZVU0lPTmlzREVBRCUzRnV0bV9zb3VyY2UlM0RoaXZlJTI2dXRtX21lZGl1bSUzRGVtYWlsJTI2dXRtX2NhbXBhaWduJTNEaGl2ZV9lbWFpbF9pZF82NTE1OVcDc3BjQgpgeA1TgGCf1bWMUht0cmlzdHJhbWJhbGR3aW45MkBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAAAAA~), Founder/GM of Pigeons & Planes Dear Pigeons, How to get your girlfriend to be okay with you smoking weed all the time? - Anonymous via Instagram Dear Anonymous, First and foremost I have a few key questions: How much is "all the time"? Were you an active pot smoker when you started seeing your girlfriend? Has your doink consumption increased dramatically while dating? Is she literally mad at you right now for smoking, and instead of talking to her and working on a solution together you're asking a music blog what to do? If you were hiding your weed smoking when you first started talking, and she's big anti-herb, I think you gotta end it right now. You don't want to be with something who disagrees with something you like to do "all the time." At the same time, is smoking "all the time" inhibiting you from being the best YOU? I like to think I'm sometimes at my most productive when I'm high [Ed. note: Debatable], and to me it's important to have that balance when smoking. It's not always an escape, I can still be productive, and it can also be a conduit to growth. On the other hand, if your consumption has increased dramatically since you started dating, I think she has every reason to not be okay with it or at least ask you, "What's up?" It's cool for your partner to ask about a noticeable change in behavior, and it's something you should be willing to have a conversation about. Talking is tight. Hope that helps somewhere. Oh and please take all this advice with a grain of salt because I am absolutely lit right now. - [John Walaszek](~/AAJOsQA~/RgRiYtgMP0UBN0TQaHR0cHM6Ly9hcHAuaGl2ZS5jby9lbWFpbC9lbHQvP2hfc2lkPTc1ODQ0ZTcxNDQtNWE4Zjg0ZmRmYmQ5OWI3MDY0OWQwMTE3Jmhhc2g9MWQxNWNmOGMxOGQwOGY2Jm5leHQ9aHR0cHMlM0EvL3R3aXR0ZXIuY29tL2p3YWxhc3playUzRnV0bV9zb3VyY2UlM0RoaXZlJTI2dXRtX21lZGl1bSUzRGVtYWlsJTI2dXRtX2NhbXBhaWduJTNEaGl2ZV9lbWFpbF9pZF82NTE1OVcDc3BjQgpgeA1TgGCf1bWMUht0cmlzdHJhbWJhbGR3aW45MkBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAAAAA~), Director of Content Strategy/Pigeons & Planes Dear Pigeons, What is your advice to emerging artists for gaining media attention when they are relatively unknown and cannot afford PR or to pay for placements? - @[agentplaybookmg](~/AAJOsQA~/RgRiYtgMP0UBOETWaHR0cHM6Ly9hcHAuaGl2ZS5jby9lbWFpbC9lbHQvP2hfc2lkPTc1ODQ0ZTcxNDQtNWE4Zjg0ZmRmYmQ5OWI3MDY0OWQwMTE3Jmhhc2g9MWQxNWNmOGMxOGQwOGY2Jm5leHQ9aHR0cHMlM0EvL3R3aXR0ZXIuY29tL0FnZW50UGxheWJvb2tNRyUzRnV0bV9zb3VyY2UlM0RoaXZlJTI2dXRtX21lZGl1bSUzRGVtYWlsJTI2dXRtX2NhbXBhaWduJTNEaGl2ZV9lbWFpbF9pZF82NTE1OVcDc3BjQgpgeA1TgGCf1bWMUht0cmlzdHJhbWJhbGR3aW45MkBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAAAAA~) on Twitter Dear Adrian, My advice for gaining media attention is the same overall advice for building or developing a career. The guiding principle here is to make great music or art, get it in front of people who might like it, and turn them into passionate fans who become your loudest and best advocates. Build your own momentum, create your own community, and media attention is more likely to follow. Of course, that's easier said than done, but if you think media attention is the secret key to success, you're likely to be disappointed. Blogs and media are no longer the gatekeepers they once were. Limited bandwidth and resources combined with the insane amount of music that's being released each day makes it hard to cut through the noise. But (from the P&P perspective at least, as a brand who is actively looking for new and emerging artists) it's easier to cut through if you have fans jumping in our comments telling us to check out x song or y artist. Other writers or outlets might feel differently, and I don't want you to spam my DMs, but if I keep seeing an artist's name come up and I go to their social page and see a vibrant, interactive community, I'll probably wonder what I'm missing. And if you're talking about paid blog or media placements, my advice would be NEVER DO IT. Press outlets that are pay-for-play are generally not credible and don't have a dedicated following that actually cares about and engages with their content. In fact, if they're taking your money in exchange for a post what's to say their own audience on socials isn't just bots that they've bought? Good luck out there! - [Alex Gardner](~/AAJOsQA~/RgRiYtgMP0UBOUTVaHR0cHM6Ly9hcHAuaGl2ZS5jby9lbWFpbC9lbHQvP2hfc2lkPTc1ODQ0ZTcxNDQtNWE4Zjg0ZmRmYmQ5OWI3MDY0OWQwMTE3Jmhhc2g9MWQxNWNmOGMxOGQwOGY2Jm5leHQ9aHR0cHMlM0EvL3R3aXR0ZXIuY29tL3RoZWNvbnN0YW50X2cvJTNGdXRtX3NvdXJjZSUzRGhpdmUlMjZ1dG1fbWVkaXVtJTNEZW1haWwlMjZ1dG1fY2FtcGFpZ24lM0RoaXZlX2VtYWlsX2lkXzY1MTU5VwNzcGNCCmB4DVOAYJ_VtYxSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjkyQGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAAAA~~), Director of Strategy & Operations, Pigeons & Planes Dear Pigeons, What’s the best way I can help my fledgling artists as a fledgling manager myself? - [@kai.evangelista](~/AAJOsQA~/RgRiYtgMP0UCMTBE3Wh0dHBzOi8vYXBwLmhpdmUuY28vZW1haWwvZWx0Lz9oX3NpZD03NTg0NGU3MTQ0LTVhOGY4NGZkZmJkOTliNzA2NDlkMDExNyZoYXNoPTFkMTVjZjhjMThkMDhmNiZuZXh0PWh0dHBzJTNBLy93d3cuaW5zdGFncmFtLmNvbS9rYWkuZXZhbmdlbGlzdGEvJTNGdXRtX3NvdXJjZSUzRGhpdmUlMjZ1dG1fbWVkaXVtJTNEZW1haWwlMjZ1dG1fY2FtcGFpZ24lM0RoaXZlX2VtYWlsX2lkXzY1MTU5VwNzcGNCCmB4DVOAYJ_VtYxSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjkyQGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAAAA~~) via Instagram Dear Kai, When you're managing a new artist, you're taking on dozens of responsibilities. And if you're learning as you go, you'll need to learn quickly. Do your research, study the moves of people you admire in the industry, and make new connections every day. Find a mentor if you can, but networking with your peers can be just as valuable. In time, you and your artists will figure things out. Sometimes you'll learn things the hard way, and not every relationship will work out, but the best way to help is to be there for your artists on a professional and a personal level. Making music for a living is not an easy path, and the industry is notoriously difficult to navigate. All too often we see artists—both struggling newcomers and successful superstars—battle mental health issues, addiction, and constant pressure. Artists are surrounded by so many people who only care about the money and the business, people willing to take something deeply personal and treat it purely as a commodity. As a manager it's your duty to look out for your artist and their career. Sure, you want them to make money, but for a truly successful career in music that should also mean that they're comfortable, not being taken advantage of, and moving in a way that's sustainable. If those things aren't priorities, the money and success isn't even going to be worth it. - [Jacob Moore](~/AAJOsQA~/RgRiYtgMP0UCMTFE1mh0dHBzOi8vYXBwLmhpdmUuY28vZW1haWwvZWx0Lz9oX3NpZD03NTg0NGU3MTQ0LTVhOGY4NGZkZmJkOTliNzA2NDlkMDExNyZoYXNoPTFkMTVjZjhjMThkMDhmNiZuZXh0PWh0dHBzJTNBLy90d2l0dGVyLmNvbS9DT05GVVNJT05pc0RFQUQlM0Z1dG1fc291cmNlJTNEaGl2ZSUyNnV0bV9tZWRpdW0lM0RlbWFpbCUyNnV0bV9jYW1wYWlnbiUzRGhpdmVfZW1haWxfaWRfNjUxNTlXA3NwY0IKYHgNU4Bgn9W1jFIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luOTJAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAAAA), Founder/GM of Pigeons & Planes Dear Pigeons, What’s your strategy with creating playlists? - [@missnewbodey](~/AAJOsQA~/RgRiYtgMP0UCMTJE2mh0dHBzOi8vYXBwLmhpdmUuY28vZW1haWwvZWx0Lz9oX3NpZD03NTg0NGU3MTQ0LTVhOGY4NGZkZmJkOTliNzA2NDlkMDExNyZoYXNoPTFkMTVjZjhjMThkMDhmNiZuZXh0PWh0dHBzJTNBLy93d3cuaW5zdGFncmFtLmNvbS9taXNzbmV3Ym9kZXkvJTNGdXRtX3NvdXJjZSUzRGhpdmUlMjZ1dG1fbWVkaXVtJTNEZW1haWwlMjZ1dG1fY2FtcGFpZ24lM0RoaXZlX2VtYWlsX2lkXzY1MTU5VwNzcGNCCmB4DVOAYJ_VtYxSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjkyQGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAAAA~~) on IG Dear missnewbodey, We are always trying new things when it comes to playlists.
