Music blogs didn't have the resources or power of major labels, but they introduced a new way for emerging artists to reach fans and make connections without going through the usual decision-makers in the industry. With the changes in media and the emergence of streaming, music blogs became all but obsolete and a new kind of order returned to the music business. Lately, things are starting to feel unstable again. As we're all settling into our new lives of increased isolation, the internet is once again doing what it does best. New online communities are forming, niche pockets of social media are opening up, and artists are employing unconventional thinking out of necessity. What will come of it all? The way 2020 is going it's impossible to predict, but we’re almost certainly heading toward another period of major disruption, whatever that looks like. The Florida rapper’s first song of 2020, and its accompanying Cole Bennett-directed video, is a bold reintroduction and fitting for this tumultuous year. The beat from Kio is tense and ominous, and Ski’s rapping is as tongue-twisting and reference-heavy as ever, packed with off-the-wall punchlines about crocodile nuts, platypus poop, and Inspector Gadget. Since his 2018 album STOKELY, Ski Mask the Slump God’s releases have been few and far between, but there’s set to be lots more new music coming soon, including his second full-length album. Instead of the usual hushed vocals and acoustic strumming, Hayes is ripping through crunchy, unrestrained, badass indie rock. Her 2020 EP take it, leave it was made alongside artist/producer and P&P favorite Billy Lemos, and it’s a brash and exhilarating initiation. Plus, you can get through the whole project in less than 10 minutes so it’s well worth your time.
