PPS Executive Director Attends Aspen Forum on Children and Families Recently, our National Executive Director, Joann Mickens, attended the Aspen Forum on Children and Families! She, along with other leaders from across the country, heard from a variety of speakers including parents, nonprofit leaders, and federal officials to learn of current and potential efforts to devise equitable and pragmatic strategies for building prosperity and well-being for all families. Mickens stated,"The forum was a wonderful opportunity to learn of the impressive grassroots work being done around the country and the efforts being made to incorporate needed changes in policy to improve outcomes for all children and families." The Great Number of Pi (PPS-San Francisco) The debate about mathematics courses in San Francisco is dominated by extreme voices, and the needs of students are being ignored. The decision to shift Algebra 1 to ninth grade was made with good intentions but is causing problems for students who lack a solid foundation in math. In addition, participation in math courses is disproportionately skewed towards White and Asian students, putting Black and Brown students at a disadvantage for college-entry and job opportunities. [LEARN MORE]( PPS-Pitt County Hosts Community Conversations Community Conversations are one of three primary programs offered annually by Parents for Public Schools-Pitt County (PPS-PC). These guided discussions involve concerned parents and community members sharing their perspectives on local schools. While typically conducted throughout the school year, this year their PEP cohort is piloting a new version of Community Conversations. In April and May, PPS-PC will host Community Conversations with the larger community. Following these discussions, PPS-PC will publish its findings and share them with the Pitt County School Board of Education and other district leaders.
