January 16, 2017 Issue #11 [View this email in your browser] Hello from Angela Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you've had a wonderful holiday season and are as excited as I am to kick off a fresh new year. Over the last two weeks of December, Eric and I hosted both sides of our family for Christmas. It was a whirlwind, but it was so much fun celebrating Arlo’s first Christmas and Adriana’s third with everyone in our house. (And it was so nice not to travel for once!) One of our goals for this holiday season was to come up with a new family tradition, and after some thought, we decided to start a memory box. Each December, we’ll write our “year in review” and attach a few recent family photos. This yearly write-up will detail the year’s ups and downs, kids’ development, business growth, travel, milestones, etc. I think it’ll be fun to look back on the years and see what we were up to. And I can’t wait for the memory box to be handed down to our kids someday. With any luck, I might just be able to keep up with it! I’d like to thank each and every one of you for your support throughout 2016. It feels impossible to write anything that’s worthy of how I feel about your enthusiasm for what we create each year. You all truly mean the world to me. Whether 2016 was your best year yet, or one you’d like to leave in the dust, I hope it was touched by the food that I share. May 2017 bring peace, happiness, love, health, compassion, laughter, and some delicious plant-based food! Without further ado, we have some fun announcements in this issue, including news about the Android version of our recipe app (spoiler alert: it's launched—yippee!), as well as lots of healthy recipe suggestions to help you feel your best all year long! Please read on, my friends…. News + Updates App News: 1) As I’m sure most of you know, we’ve been hard at work developing an Android version of our popular iOS recipe app. Today I’m so excited to let you know that the Android version [has officially launched]! Just like our iOS app, the Android version will provide you with more than 95—and counting—delicious plant-based recipes. To celebrate this long-awaited event, the Android app is just $2.99 CAD/$1.99 USD (and [the iOS app] is as well!). To all my Android-using fans out there, thank you so much for your enthusiasm, patience, and encouragement to develop this version; I hope you all love cooking with the app as much as we do. And thank you to our iOS app users, as well: because of your feedback and support we were able to expand to an Android version! 2) Last week I added 3 free healthy recipes to the app: Easy Nut-Free Taco Salad, Dill Pickle Smoothie, and Brownie Breakfast Bake. Be sure to check them out! Also, the Cookie Lover's bundle (featuring 5 app-exclusive vegan cookie recipes) is still free for a limited time! 3) A new "Get Glowing" app recipe bundle is available for purchase (to iOS and Android users alike!). For 99¢, you’ll receive 5 “reset button” recipes to cover all your bases in the new year: Miso Veggie Detox Soup, Warm Miso-Garlic Quinoa and Kale Salad, The Balance Wrap, Restoring Citrus Tonic, and Monster Bars. They’ll be sure to inspire healthy eating in 2017 and beyond. Simply head to the bundles page and check out the Get Glowing recipe bundle! We’re happy to let you know that for the month of January 100% of the proceeds from this bundle will be donated to Blessings in a Backpack Canada. The organization’s program ensures children in need receive backpacks filled with food every Friday throughout the school year, so they can return to school on Monday well fed and ready to learn. (For more information on Blessings in a Backpack, visit the charity’s website at [blessingsinabackpack.ca].) 4) Back in December, we heard from the Canadian App Store that The Oh She Glows – Healthy Plant-Based Recipe App was one of the Best of 2016 on the iPad. This is such a crazy honour, and it’s all because of your amazing support. Also, you can now test drive a demo version of our app in select Apple stores across Canada. Just look for our icon on the iPads. We’re not sure if the demo version is available in any stores outside of Canada, but if you see it, please let us know! 5) Did you know you can now receive alerts whenever we add a new recipe to the app? To get new recipe alerts, simply go to settings --> Oh She Glows --> notifications --> enable allow notifications. Cookbook News 1) I want to thank everyone for their support of my second cookbook, Oh She Glows Every Day. It [made #6 on Amazon.ca’s 2016][list of bestselling books for adults], has been #1 or #2 on the Globe & Mail Bestseller list since it was released, and quickly became a New York Times Bestseller. It was also Indigo CEO [Heather Reisman’s pick for best cookbook] of 2016! All of this is so unbelievable and I couldn’t be more grateful. So thank you again to everyone who has bought the book for their kitchens, gifted it, and helped spread the word. You’re amazing! 2) For our friends in the UK, I’m happy to announce that [Oh She Glows Every Day] launched in the UK last week (on January 12th)! Check out the official cover below. This week's featured recipes [All Day Glow Green Smoothie] Warm Golden Milk (OSG Recipe App) Metabolism-Revving Spicy Cabbage Soup (Oh She Glows Every Day p. 139) [Chia Fresca] [Hot Detox Tonic] [Superfood Crunch Salad with Homemade Balsamic Apple Vinaigrette] [Energizing Broccoli Dal] Monster Bars (OSG Recipe App, Get Glowing Detox bundle) Q + A of the Week Q: Hi, Angela! I’m trying to get back into the swing of things after the holidays, and I’m wondering if you can suggest some good-for-you, quick or make-ahead lunch and dinner recipes that I can have on hand during the workweek. Thank you! A: Hi there! This is such a great question, especially as I know many of us like to have a plan of attack for the post-holiday back-to-work (or -school) transition. To start off, here are a few recipes that can be quickly thrown together for dinner and that will provide plenty of leftovers for lunch the next day (or even better, the next couple of days!). The first three recipes also work great in the slow cooker; I have yet to try out the other recipes in the slow cooker, but I expect all of the soups should work just fine. [Cozy Butternut, Sweet Potato, and Red Lentil Stew] [Glowing Spiced Lentil Soup] [My Favourite Vegan Chili] Easy Nut-Free Taco Salad (OSG Recipe App) Metabolism-Revving Spicy Cabbage Soup (Oh She Glows Every Day p. 139) Creamy Thai Carrot Sweet Potato Soup (Oh She Glows Every Day p. 141) [Red Lentil, Tomato, and Kale Soup] [10-Spice Vegetable Soup] Golden French Lentil Stew (Oh She Glows Every Day p. 145) Sweet Potato, Chickpea, and Spinach Coconut Curry (Oh She Glows Every Day p. 179) [Golden Red Lentil Dal with Cilantro-Speckled Basmati] [DIY Burrito Bowl] [Speedy Veggie Noodle Bowl with Homemade Teriyaki Sauce] Quick & Easy Chana Masala (The Oh She Glows Cookbook p. 163) Enlightened Miso Power Bowl (The Oh She Glows Cookbook p. 177) [Protein Power Goddess Bowl] (The Oh She Glows Cookbook p. 175) If you find yourself super busy and strapped for time, it can be really helpful having smaller, snack-type foods around that you can easily grab and go, “grazing” throughout the day. Some of my favourite options include [PB&J Thumbprint Breakfast Cookies], [Banana Bread Muffin Tops], [Chia Seed Pudding], and Glo Bars (Classic Glo Bars, p. 215 of The Oh She Glows Cookbook; Present Glo Bar, p. 217 of The Oh She Glows Cookbook; [New Mama Glo Bars]). All of these freeze great (yes, even the Chia Seed Pudding—I like to freeze individual servings!) so you can stock up and always have some on hand, and they come together quickly with very little fuss. Way Back, Play Back [Pink Power Detox Smoothie] Beet, strawberry, avocado, and lemon unite to create one kick-butt, delicious, bright pink power smoothie! It’s lightly sweet and creamy, while packing in the detoxifying power of beet and lemon. I find the beet flavour is balanced quite nicely in this smoothie, so even if you’re not a beet fan, it may be worth giving it a try. [Click here] for the recipe! "I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're doing something." Neil Gaiman Photo Credits: Metabolism-Revving Spicy Cabbage Soup photo: Ashley McLaughlin.
