Remarkable depth of rewarding selections: discover your next favorite bottle... Monday May 9th, 2022 [View in Browser]( [KL-emailheader.gif]( [Burgundy News]( [Today's Newsletter]( takes us on a multi-stop jaunt through Burgundy with intrepid K&L buyer Alex Pross. Perhaps more than any other region in France, Burgundy has been subject to the viccissitudes of economics and Mother Nature the past few years, so an already tight market has gotten even tighter. But luckily for us, in addition to some indefatigable reference-point producers, Alex keeps a deep stable of top-tier direct-import hidden gems that bring us both exceptional value and impeccable class. We start by revisiting two of our best-selling red Burgundies of the past year with a pair of QPR stunners from the iconic Domaine Faiveley, after which we segue straight into a stellar line-up of direct-import beauties, beginning with the magical Puligny whites of Paul Pernot and moving on to Albert Morot's 1er Cru Beaune value stunners, Charrière's incredible 2019s and 2020s, and the next great hidden gem from St-Aubin, Sylvain Langoureau. A short side trip to Beaujolais reveals a region awash in impeccable old-vine expressions for a steal, while La Chablisiènne brings us reference-point Chablis terroir at unbeatable prices. Finally, first-tranche 2020 allocations of Bouchard Père et Fils should make any collector sit up and take notice. [Côte de Beaune Aerial View] --------------------------------------------------------------- Undisputed Value Champions from Faiveley Two of our best-selling red Burgundies from the past year have been this pair of value champions from the iconic Domaine Faiveley. The Mercurey 1er Cru "Clos des Myglands" has long been known for punching well above its weight class, and the 2019 is certainly no exception. Decanter's 92-point review draws a comparison to "the breed and class of a wine from the Côte d'Or," and William Kelley of Wine Advocate declares it "velvety and succulent, with fine depth at the core and a suave, elegant profile" while mentioning it in the same conversation as the benchmark 2010. While the single-cru wines receive perennial acclaim, the village-level bottlings also present quintessential character in spades. Case in point is the excellent 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes. Made from an esteemed collection of old-vine plots throughout the appellation, including in Clos Prieur and Clos de la Justices, this gem carries a bevy of critical accolades, including Decanter’s 93-point review that calls it “a textbook Gevrey-Chambertin” and “a very harmonious cuvée.” Meanwhile, Inside Burgundy’s Jasper Morris sees 94-point potential down the road and praises its “rich, full colour, with an absolute wealth of fruit, first on the nose but especially on the palate.” At remarkable sub-$50 prices, these are top choices among savvy buyers looking to maximize their Burgundy buck without sacrificing anything in the way of authentic terroir expression and top-tier winemaking. With some of the finest plots in many of the best vineyards in Puligny, the domaine has superb raw materials with which to work its magic. From the signature, "medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping" 1er Cru Les Folatièrs to the "layered and textural" Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, the 2020 vintage proved to be a banner year for this property, with the wines perfectly capturing the balanced character of the vintage. As part of our Direct Import portfolio, we are able to offer these wines for substantially less than one might expect, making them some of the best deals going in age-worthy white Burgundy. Supplies are always limited, so we recommend acting fast to secure your favorites. One of the most fertile grounds for value and quality is the St-Aubin appellation, which excelled in the highly acclaimed 2020 vintage. Vinous’ Neal Martin explains, “irrespective of price, the best climats...can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Puligny Premier Crus.” Among the bevy of boutique domaines that are setting new standards of excellence in the appellation, Domaine Sylvain Langoureau is a hidden gem of the highest order. From three of St-Aubin’s most distinctive sites, this trio of 2019 1er Cru white Burgundies offers incredible terroir expression and vintage character, each at sub-$40 market-best pricing. Longtime Burgundy collectors will understand how rare this combination is these days, so going long on this offer quickly becomes a no-brainer for anyone in the know. The notoriously rigorous Allen Meadows of Burghound tagged all four bottlings with his "Outstanding" designation, offering solid praise for these under-the-radar value stars. The superb, 95-point 1er Cru Les Teurons leads the way. "Luscious in fruit yet svelte and bristling, it’s an elegant, satisfying wine," according to Wine Enthusiast. K&L Burgundy buyer Alex Pross' favorite expression, the Marconnets "has it all and is easily one of the best in-stock values we currently have in red Burgundy." The BH92 Toussaints and BH92 Les Aigrots round out a set of unbeatable cellar buys for the astute Burgundy collector. The recently arrived 2015s are utterly stunning straight out the gate and are guaranteed to charm many a Burgundy fan near and far. Since taking the reins from his father Yves, Benoît Girardin has taken great strides to make the wines more accessible, while not compromising any of their depth and complexity. These 2019s and 2020s are irrefutable proof that these efforts have more than paid off. Across the range, the wines are endowed with a fleshiness and plush approach that makes for very easy drinking. But their easy of approach is only a fraction of the story here, as these are outstanding values and beautiful representatives of the exceptional back-to-back vintages. Given the QPR up and down the range, these count among the best Burgundy finds in our inventory, and they're all in-stock and ready to ship. Perhaps no other region in France has seen its caché rise so sharply in the past decade as Beaujolais. An untold number of small domaines are now producing utterly compelling wines of terroir and style that still come in at prices one could only describe as miraculous. One of our favorite hidden gems, Jean-Michel Dupré expresses old-vine brilliance in his WE92 Vigne de 1935, from octogenarian vines, and his impeccable Morgon Côte du Py, from arguably the most prized site in all of Beaujolais, each at a simply jaw-dropping bargain price. Speaking of which, you can also find the same in a trio of outlandishly good value stars from Terres Secretes. These perennial best sellers show just how enchanting value Burgundy can be if you know where to look. Our long-time Burgundy fans have been clued into these wines for a while, and it's high time everyone else got on board, too. Working with village-level fruit from some of Côte de Beaune's overlooked appellations, he's crafting some of the very best bangs for your Burgundy buck in our inventory, showing equal skill with both Pinot and Chardonnay. K&L Burgundy buyer Alex Pross has nothing but high praise for this set, noting the Auxey-Duresses Blanc displays "all the richness and power you’d expect ... with remarkable balance and perfect acidity." Also not to be missed is the wonderful Pommard, "open for business and drinking beautifully right now" according to Alex. For those who thought exceptional Burgundy had outpaced their budgets, you owe it to yourself to check out the quiet genius of Jacques Bavard. By sourcing from many growers with small parcels in the appellation’s best vineyards, the co-op creates a wealth of memorable and authentic expressions that also come in at unbeatable prices. Highlights in the line-up below include the incredibly priced 2017 1er crus Vaillons and Côte de Léchet, from a modern-classic vintage that's nearly impossible to find on the market these days. The flagship of their expansive line-up, however, is the WE95 Château Grenouilles Grand Cru, always a fabulously authentic expression of this beloved vineyard. Eminent Burgundy authority Jasper Morris tabbed it with 94 points, calling it "a complete rendition of Grenouilles [with] very impressive weight and length." It's one of the best buys you'll find in Grand Cru Chablis at a market-best $64.99. We've been fans of this co-op for many years now, the main reason being the top-to-bottom outstanding QPR that seems to be a perennial hallmark here. Highlights include the usual suspects in the Volnay 1er Cru Ancienne Cuvée Carnot - Les Caillerets and the Beaune-Grèves 1er Cru Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus, each of which have already garnered superb press. Not to be missed, however, are the spectacular, sub-$100 rendition of the Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières and the potential 98-point Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, which Inside Burgundy's Jasper Morris calls "a majestic Corton-Charlemagne in the making." Many of these standout renditions are available at market-best, first-tranche pricing, making this a can't-miss opportunity for Burgundy collectors to line their cellars with benchmark renditions from a modern classic vintage.
