The 2019 Napa vintage is shaping up to be an all-time great, with initial critical press suggesting yet another stellar display of power and opulence, while Bordeaux's 2019s are getting similar stratospheric acclaim as the in-bottle reviews are coming in from the region's most important and influential voices. In a twist of great fortune for Burgundy, a warm and dry 2020 vintage yielded wines of both ripeness and vibrant freshness, a combination that bodes extremely well for cellar prospects for both reds and whites. [TOR Wines] --------------------------------------------------------------- 2019 Napa: Power and Panache in Another Stellar Vintage Coming off the heels of the ultra-classic 2018 vintage, Napa lovers have another barn burner on their hands in the monumental 2019 vintage. With the stunning success of its predecessor, we had high hopes for 2019. But it's safe to say even the most seasoned aficionados and insiders are now brimming with excitement over the initial reports on the finished wines. As Antonio Galloni observes, "Most producers would kill for back-to-back vintages like these ... the best 2019s are positively thrilling." Jeb Dunnuck likewise notes, "2019 will be another terrific vintage for Napa Valley, and it should match or surpass 2018." This is perhaps the single best descriptor of the 2020 vintage, in which producers performed record early harvests in a warm and dry year but turned out wines of uncompromising balance between ripeness and vibrancy. Wine Advocate's William Kelley was both perplexed and amazed when he declared, "Distinguished by their deep, saturated hues, prodigious concentration and vibrant flavors, the best 2020 reds are striking wines, built for the ages." The potential for greatness is in full evidence in 2020 for Chardonnay as well. Kelley places them "clearly among the very best produced in the last two decades," while Vinous' Neal Martin notes, "the best whites almost shimmer with mineralité ... I was surprised how the wines translate their birthplaces down to the smallest grid reference."
