Featuring all-star finds from Bordeaux, Napa, Burgundy, and more... Monday Feb 21st, 2022 [View in Browser]( [KL-emailheader.gif]( Top Collector's Picks from the World's Greatest Regions Featuring 2019 Napa, 2019 Bordeaux, 2020 Burgundy, and more... --------------------------------------------------------------- There's no question that it's a great time to be a collector, as the new release campaigns for the world's most revered wine regions feature some of their finest vintages of the past two decades. The 2019 Napa vintage is shaping up to be an all-time great, with initial critical press suggesting yet another stellar display of power and opulence, while Bordeaux's 2019s are getting similar stratospheric acclaim as the in-bottle reviews are coming in from the region's most important and influential voices. In a twist of great fortune for Burgundy, a warm and dry 2020 vintage yielded wines of both ripeness and vibrant freshness, a combination that bodes extremely well for cellar prospects for both reds and whites. The 2018 and 2019 Northern Rhône vintages feature varied styles, but both years turned out not-to-be-missed stunners, including several 100-pointers, that should have aficionados grinning ear to ear. Finally, our loyal spirits fanantics will rejoice at a trio of absolutely jaw-dropping K&L exclusive casks from the one-and-only Gordon & MacPhail. [TOR Wines] --------------------------------------------------------------- 2019 Napa: Power and Panache in Another Stellar Vintage Coming off the heels of the ultra-classic 2018 vintage, Napa lovers have another barn burner on their hands in the monumental 2019 vintage. With the stunning success of its predecessor, we had high hopes for 2019. But it's safe to say even the most seasoned aficionados and insiders are now brimming with excitement over the initial reports on the finished wines. As Antonio Galloni observes, "Most producers would kill for back-to-back vintages like these ... the best 2019s are positively thrilling." Jeb Dunnuck likewise notes, "2019 will be another terrific vintage for Napa Valley, and it should match or surpass 2018." While the lion's share of attention will naturally be on the heavy hitters, the selection below is your gateway to many of the region's unequivocal, under-the-radar best buys, highlighted by Sinegal's V98, sub-$80 Estate Cabernet. This is perhaps the single best descriptor of the 2020 vintage, in which producers performed record early harvests in a warm and dry year but turned out wines of uncompromising balance between ripeness and vibrancy. Wine Advocate's William Kelley was both perplexed and amazed when he declared, "Distinguished by their deep, saturated hues, prodigious concentration and vibrant flavors, the best 2020 reds are striking wines, built for the ages." The potential for greatness is in full evidence in 2020 for Chardonnay as well. Kelley places them "clearly among the very best produced in the last two decades," while Vinous' Neal Martin notes, "the best whites almost shimmer with mineralité ... I was surprised how the wines translate their birthplaces down to the smallest grid reference." In other words, this is a vintage of pure terroir expression that avid Burgundy fans will want to go long on. Glowing acclaim is the going norm from the critical press, with nearly every prominent voice levying praise. Wine Advcoate's Lisa Perotti-Brown declares, "2019 is an outstanding vintage ... like a vortex of contrasts together creating a truly amazing sense of harmony." Never one for rhetorical flourish, Vinous' Neal Martin succinctly states, "It is an excellent vintage," a sentiment echoed almost verbatim by Jane Anson in Inside Bordeaux. Perhaps the most effusive praise yet comes from Jeb Dunnuck, who declares, "there were numerous times while tasting through these 2019s that I had the impression that I was tasting a modern-day version of the 1982s." From the vastly overachieving Barde-Haut and Marquis d'Alesme to the potentially perfect, wine-of-the-vintage-caliber Haut Brion, 2019 Bordeaux is stacked to the hilt with can't-miss, collectible champions. This region has enjoyed an exceptional run of excellence recently, culminating in the modern classic 2019 vintage and its treasure trove of potential benchmarks. The spectacularly overachieving Domaine de Remizières has turned out some of its best wines ever, while iconic reference points like Alain Voge, René Rostaing, and Paul Jaboulet continue to set the bar, including the latter's not-to-be-missed, 100-point flagship Hermitage La Chapelle. 2019's predecessor is not shy on standouts either, as 2018 is replete with jaw-dropping expressions up and down the price spectrum. Durand's sub-$60 Cornas shows why this is a domaine to know, while Guigal has blown the doors off the collectible QPR scale with a JD97-99 Château d'Ampuis Côte-Rôtie, a potential best-ever rendition for just over $100.
