[2014 Villa Pillo "Borgoforte" Toscana]( ($12.99)
91 points Wine Spectator: " *#25 on Top 100 of 2016, Best Values* Enticing aromas of violet, black currant and rosemary are accented by licorice and tobacco flavors in this fluid and harmonious red, with fine tannins gracing the long finish. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2022. (BS)" (11/2016)
[2014 Jim Barry "Cover Drive" Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra South Australia (Elsewhere $20)]( ($14.95)
91 points Wine & Spirits: "A classic Coonawarra style of cabernet, this presents ripe currant fruit in a clean, spicy arrow of flavor. Light touches of eucalyptus follow the fruit through a dry finish. Fresh and lasting, this is an approachable cabernet for rack of lamb." (10/2016)
91 points Wine Enthusiast: "*** Editors' Choice *** This is a terrific value in balanced, ready-to-drink Australian Cabernet. It brings several Bordeaux-ish qualities to the table-medium body, silky tannins and aromas reminiscent of cigar box and Ribena-then adds varietally true flavors and a long finish. Drink now-2025. (JC)" (04/2017)
K&L Notes: Winery Notes: "On the southern boundary of Coonawarra is the old Penola cricket ground, which first saw a ball bowled in anger and the flashing cover drives of the local champions in 1950. Sadly, the ground closed in 1996. Soon after Jim Barry purchased the 30 acre property and planted a Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard. The original pavilion and pitch have been retained, thus preserving an important piece of Coonawarra sporting history. Fruit from this vineyard, along with selected parcels of fruit from our family owned Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the Clare Valley have been blended to produce a wine that is rich, soft and approachable. This wine shows a brooding dark red colour in the glass. The nose boasts of aromatic blackberry and blue fruits with refined hints of bay leaves and mint. On the palate a great line of acidity drives through the wine supporting talcy ripe tannins. Flavours of blackberry and mulberry shine from the medium bodied composition."

Coonawarra is producing some delicious, very easy-drinking wines and this Cover Drive is no exception. It is soft and approachable with lush fruit and just a touch of acidity on the front palate to brighten it up. This Cab Sauv does not overwhelm with overpowering tannin or spice, but glides across the palate with its silky mouthfeel. The Barry family has been making wine here for generations and it's easy to see why their legacy has lasted when you taste this Cab.
[2014 Remo Farina Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso]( ($16.99)
[2015 Domaine des Bosquets Gigondas (Pre-Arrival)]( ($24.99)
92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Looking at the classic cuvee, the 2015 Gigondas is a wine that readers should buy by the case. A blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and the balance Mourvèdre and Cinsault, it offers up gorgeous notes of black raspberry, fruit tart, spice and incense in a medium to full-bodied, ultra pure, seamless style that just begs to be drunk. It will keep for over a decade. Readers wanting to get a hold of the best of the 2015 vintage need to latch onto these wines from Domaine des Bosquets. This estate has been brought up to the pinnacle of Gigondas, and the Southern Rhône, by the talent and drive of the Brechet family, namely the young Julien Brechet, and consultant Philippe Cambie... Their traditional cuvee is a normal blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and the rest Mourvèdre and Cinsault, from all the estate parcels, and its aged in concrete tanks and older barrels. (JD)" (12/2016)
[2015 Quartz Reef "Bendigo Single Vineyard" Pinot Noir Central Otago (Biodynamic) (Elsewhere $40)]( ($29.99)
95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Medium ruby-purple in color, the 2015 Pinot Noir exudes gorgeous violets, red roses and black cherry notes with underlying Provence herbs, dusty earth and cinnamon stick hints. Medium-bodied, the palate has a firm backbone of ripe, velvety tannins with lively acid supporting the concentrated, multi-layered flavors, finishing long. Spectacular Pinot Noir!"
[2015 Domaine Durieu "Lucile Avril" Chateauneuf-du-Pape (Pre-Arrival)]( ($34.99)
92-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I loved the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Lucille Avril, and Ive bought and cellared this cuvée for years (the 2007 is killer juice). Big, structured and tannic, yet with sensational purity and classic notes of blackberries, raspberries, roasted meats and roasted herbs, it expands on the palate, is impeccably balanced and will be an age-worthy Châteauneuf du Pape. Ive had numerous splendid bottles from this estate over the past decade and I continue to love the wines from the young Vincent Durieu." (10/2016)
[2013 Argiano "Solengo" Toscana (Elsewhere $60)]( ($39.99)
94 points James Suckling: "I have been a fan of Solengo since the mid-1990s. The 2013 vintage shows great generosity in its ripe fruit, with currant and stone character, a firm undertone of tannins and a flavorful finish. Try in 2018 but already very attractive to taste." (11/2015)
St. Clair]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 20, 2017
Argiano's Super Tuscan blend, was originally created by the famed enologist Giacomo Tachis. They call it Tuscan soil meets French varieties and it's a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Syrah. The nose is full of aromatics, dense, Syrah spice, then plumy Cabernet followed by perfumed Merlot. On the palate the wine is rich, dense and you can feel the Petit Verdot, it gives the wine a saturated feeling, thick and intense. The richness is nicely offset by a surprisingly refreshing acidity, especially for the weight of this wine, which allows the complex nature of these flavors to blend together. Lots of length, spice, sweet fruit really make this wine a great drink now and at this price its a total steal!
[2012 Leeuwin "Art Series" Cabernet Sauvignon Margaret River Western Australia (Elsewhere $50)]( [2012 Leeuwin "Art Series" Cabernet Sauvignon Margaret River Western Australia (Elsewhere $50)]( ($39.99)
97 points James Suckling: "This is the Mouton-Rothschild of Australia - with a screw cap! Incredibly complex aromas of blackcurrants, spices, cigar box, and berries. Full body, a fantastic palate and polished tannins. Goes for minutes. Better in 2017." (03/2016)
96 points James Halliday: "The headline, the main text and the footnotes all say one thing and one thing only: purity. And I suppose I should add elegance. They simply don't come better in this mode." (10/2016)
K&L Notes: Winemaker's Notes: "Dark ruby red with a black core. Vibrant and concentrated fruit aroma of abundant blackcurrant, dark cherries and mulberry. Beneath the lifted aromatics of anise, cocoa, clove, black olive and earthy wild field mushroom provide elegant layers to a highly expressive and complex nose. Structure and fruit weight work harmoniously on the palate, characterized by a dark fruit core of blackcurrant and forest fruits. Savoury spices of dried sage, cassia bark, and tobacco gives subtle texture, and combines with diligent oak integration and a fine acid line. All components arrive to a finish featuring slightly chalky cocoa powder-like tannins. 2012 was an exceptional vintage for Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon. Summer temperatures were above average but with very few hot days, the afternoon sea breeze always a welcome cooling influence. The weather was consistently fine, warm and sunny with little rain. A Margaret River powerhouse, the Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon is made in a long lived style due to its ample fruit and sturdy frame. Often described as 'Bordeaux like' the core of the fruit comes from 30+-year-old vines grown in well-draining gravel/granite derived soils. The Art Series range is identified with paintings commissioned from leading contemporary Australian artists."

My personal barometer for Margaret River Cabernet in any given vintage. This is a benchmark wine with immense pedigree and impeccable consistency. I can absolutely see why one might compare it to First Growth Bordeaux. Not just on the exceptional quality of this release, but on the merit of Leeuwin Estate's unwavering dedication to excellence year in and year out to produce authentic wines that faithfully reflect the season and magical terroir of Margaret River. I feel obliged to mention Leeuwin's entirely pragmatic choice of Stelvin closure. They believe (as do I) that this is the best and most consistent seal for the wine to effectively preserve all the hard work they put into crafting it. The silly myth about not being able to cellar wines under screwcap has been thoroughly debunked long ago and I will be enjoying this wine from my cellar for decades to come.
[2015 Robert Biale "Black Chicken" Napa Valley Zinfandel]( ($45.99)
The Return of the Black Chicken! Robert Biale knows Zin. Since 1937, the Biale family has grown Zinfandel along with assorted other varieties on their farm just outside the town of Napa. Their Zins are famous for a certain breed of intensity and power--the kind you get when you restrict yields to only the best, most concentrated, fully ripe fruit each vintage. "Black Chicken" gets its name from Aldo Biale, who used the name as a code word when he started making the wine on the sly in the '40s and didn't want other members of his family to know. Black Chicken is primarily sourced from Biale's Oak Knoll District ranch estate.
[2012 Castellare di Castellina "I Sodi di San Niccolò" Toscana]( ($64.99)
96 points James Suckling: "Captivating aromas of dark fruits, cedar and tobacco follow through to a full body, silky and chewy tannins and a flavorful, rich finish. Very intense and pretty. Provocative. A classic Super Tuscan. A blend of Sangiovese and Malvasia Nera. Drink in 2019." (11/2016)
95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As always, this celebrated wine shows excellent results. The 2012 I Sodi di S. Niccolò (85% Sangioveto and 15% Malvasia Nera) is a young wine that needs time to flesh out. It shows bright berry flavors and fresh acidity that will benefit from more time to relax and integrate. The wine is beautifully stitched together and balanced with soft contours, and has a long, lively mouthfeel. It offers wild berry and red cherry with spice, crushed stone, pressed blue flower and scorched earth. The wine is aged in equal parts new and neutral oak. (ML)" (12/2016)
[2015 Maison Dominique Laurent Clos de la Roche "Vieilles Vignes" Grand Cru (Pre-Arrival)]( ($159.99)
94-97 points Vinous: "(100% destemmed; "Réserve Personnelle" is denoted on the neck label): Ruby-red. Pungent rocky minerality enlivens the aromas of medicinal red cherry, meat and chocolate. Superconcentrated and remarkably sweet, boasting uncommon breadth and depth to its red fruit and salty mineral flavors. Finishes with sweet but serious tannins and compelling rising length and minerality. An epic Clos de la Roche in the making." (01/2017)
[2015 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru "Champans" (Pre-Arrival)]( ($179.99)
93-96 points Vinous: "Bright medium ruby. Mineral-driven aromas of blackberry, cassis, licorice, bitter chocolate and crushed stone, plus a touch of sweet oak. Suave, silky black fruit and violet flavors show absolutely no rough edges. The wonderfully refined tannins arrive late, allowing the fruit to open beautifully on the very long, palate-staining finish. An outstanding wine with a compellingly rich, layered texture, this was racked in July, like the Clos des Ducs." (01/2016)
93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a very charming, very pure and seductive bouquet with copious blackberry, raspberry preserve and limestone scents. With a few swirls of the glass it become floral and even more enticing. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. It it not as generous as the bouquet at the moment, but there is purity and verve here, very sophisticated and showing immense precision on the finish. I can imagine this being backward for 3-5 years after bottling, so be prepared to cellar this and reap the rewards later. Guillaume dAngerville presided over a fine set of 2015s that rank amongst some of the finest from Volnay. "From the season standpoint, 2015 started similar to 2014 in terms of the early spring. But then the hydric stress began in May. We had some rain at the beginning of the month and then it became dry and very warm. The flowering was early, taking place around 10 June " (12/2016)
[2015 Chateau de la Tour Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes (Pre-Arrival)]( ($219.99)
94-96 points Vinous: "Dark red with ruby tones. Penetrating aromas and flavors of black cherry and minerals. Wonderfully creamy and deep but with a compelling juiciness to leaven its velvety sweetness. Utterly mouthcoating thickness here as well as outstanding spicy depth and impeccable balance. Finishes with powerful tannins and great persistence. And bone-dry in spite of its strong impression of sucrosité. This will age for a long time. Labet described this wine as "like drinking through a funnel: we feel the pressure but it's coming through a small hole." (ST)" (01/2017)
92-95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "*** Sweet Spot ***This is aromatically similar to the regular cuvée but there is notably more concentration, power and dry extract that pushes the very firm tannic spine to the background on the hugely long, palate coating and driving finish. This is a manifestly old school Clos de Vougeot that is not only very much built-to-age but is going to require lots of it. In a word, excellent." (01/2017)
[2015 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru (Pre-Arrival)]( ($329.99)
92-95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Once again the nose is quite ripe yet very fresh with its layered array of spicy and markedly floral-inflected black cherry and plum scents. There is impressive size, weight and power to the more mineral-driven and refined medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by a distinctly firm tannic spine on the wonderfully persistent and mildly austere finale. This is one very serious wine in 2015 and thus be prepared to allow it at least 10 to 12 years first." (01/2017)
93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Clos de Lambrays Grand Cru contains 95% whole cluster fruit, part of the crop with thicker skins deprived of their stems according to winemaker Thierry Brouin. It is being aged in 50% new oak. It has dusky black fruit on the nose, earthier than I was expecting given the growing season, the stem addition lending a subtle undergrowth and moss-like scent. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin and offers succinctly judged acidity. It is certainly harmonious in the mouth with a generous dash of black pepper on the finish, a pleasant prickle in the mouth after the wine has departed. Whilst not the purring engine that is Clos de Tart since it is more rough-hewn perhaps, this Clos des Lambrays has a charm of its own." (12/2016)
93-95 points Vinous: "(made with 95% whole clusters; Brouin destemmed 5% of the fruit owing to the thick skins of '15): Healthy dark red. Subdued but complex, sexy scents of raspberry, mocha, brown spices and earth: a real essence of this distinctive grand cru. Sappy and wild, conveying terrific intensity and precision to its red berry and spice flavors. Tactile, savory, dense and very long, finishing with lovely energy and peppery lift and a lingering element of salty minerality. Beautifully integrated ripe tannins suggest that this will be an outstanding and long-lived vintage for Clos des Lambrays. The pH here is 3.6, which Brouin described as normal. Brouin added that potential alcohol levels following the sorting were around 12.5% in 2015, and that the finished wines will be between 13% and 13.2%." (01/2107)
[2005 Latour, Pauillac (2017 Ex-Chateau Release) (Pre-Arrival)]( ($895.00)
100 points James Suckling: "A very complex nose of lavender, currants, spices, and hot stones. Full and dense on the palate, with a very tight structure. The tannins have a perfect polish to their density, and the finish is very intense, with wonderful fruit and truffle character. This turns almost decadent, with tremendous energy and a constantly changing profile. This is a very challenging wine to get to know, please leave this for at least ten years." (02/2011)
100 points Wine & Spirits: "How rare to confront a wine of this inner strength and perfect form. Grown at a 116-acre vineyard at the southern border of Pauillac, some of the vines now reaching 100 years of age on a gravel bar overlooking the Gironde, Latour harvests Cabernet Sauvignon with natural power. I could describe it as colors, from glistening ruby to purple-black then back to scarlet tannins that vibrate in red. Or just the pure, unadulterated flavor of black currant, unformed as a child is unformed, beautiful as a child is beautiful. However I might describe it, the wine is stronger than I am and will outlast me by decades. This is the most provocative and most brilliant Latour I have tasted on release." (10/2008)
100 points Wine Enthusiast: " *Best of 2008. Cellar Selection* A great wine, the summation of a great vintage in Bordeaux. The core of richness, the dense, bone-dry tannins, the black currants, red berries and black plum skins are the elements, but its the way they have been integrated that makes this such an impressive wine. There is great elegance as well, a fabulous counterpoint to such power. Cellar for at least 15 years, but this will keep forever. (RV)" (06/2008)
