Cali Cabs, collectible values in Rioja, Champagne, Bordeaux, and more... Monday Aug 16th, 2021 [View in Browser]( [KL-emailheader.gif]( K&L Top 10 Selections: August 2021 Featuring: Cali Cab and Zinfandel, Value in Bordeaux, Collectible Rioja, Vintage Champagne, Alsatian Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc from CA and NZ, and Small Batch Whiskey --------------------------------------------------------------- August's Top 10 starts off with a pair of domestic Cabs that show the remarkable quality that California continues to deliver. The 2016 Salvestrin "Dr. Crane Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon comes from an exceptional vintage, has peerless provenance, and represents significant savings on what you'll find it for elsewhere. Meanwhile, the 2018 O'Shaughnessy Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a 97-point offering from one of the stalwarts of the region. Those looking for an even bolder red won't do better than Marietta's 2019 "Román" North Coast Zinfandel, a 95-point, sub-$20 blockbuster, while white wine fans will thrill over the limited-time pricing we have available on the 2019 Margerum "Patina" (Sybarite) Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara Sauvignon Blanc. Wrapping up our domestic offering is the California-exclusive Prohibition Craft Spirits "NULU Reserve" Barrel-Proof Small Batch CA1 Indiana Straight Bourbon Whiskey that shows the best this distillery has to offer. [Trimbach]( Moving to the Old World, why not start with bubbles and the sublime 2008 Billecart-Salmon "Cuvée Elisabeth" Brut Rosé Champagne? We love every bottling from this powerhouse Grand Marque, and with market-best pricing, this is a no-brainer to have on hand for any sort of celebration. From the soaring 2016 vintage in Bordeaux, Château Latour's Pauillac de Latour is a stunning example of what Jeb Dunnuck calls "the entry level wine from this great estate." Rounding out the French trio is benchmark Alsace producer Trimbach and their superlative, 96-point 2017 "Sélection de Vieilles Vignes" Riesling. A bit further south, Rioja delivers a spellbinding bottling in the 2016 Remelluri "Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida" Rioja, which proves yet again that some of the world's best wine values can be found in Spain. And rounding out our top selections, we travel way farther south to New Zealand to find the sub-$20 2020 TWR (Te Whare Ra) Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough racking up 94- and 93-point scores that would befit a wine at many multiples of the price. Here, too, Doug Margerum balances vivacity with depth. (AG)" (08/2020) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Very light in the glass, this always reliable white wine starts with aromas of pear soda, red apple and slightly tropical white and green flowers. The texture is taut and dry, with brisk flavors of red apple, seashell, lemongrass and a fast-fading flash of guava. (MK)" (09/2020) 90 points Jeb Dunnuck: "There are two Sauvignon Blanc releases. Starting with the 2019 Sauvignon Blanc Sybarite, it offers fruit-forward notes of white grapefruit, citrus, and sappy herb notes in its medium-bodied, supple, deliciously charming style." (08/2020) [ryanwoodhouse.gif]( Woodhouse]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 10, 2021 Year after year Margerum's "Sybarite" Sauvignon Blanc is one of my go-to summer whites and one of the finest Sauvignon Blancs made in California. This is a wine you will consistently see floor-stacked in all our stores and personally recommended by many of our staff. A couple weeks ago when we were offered the opportunity to take a position on a parcel of this wine that had been bottled under a restaurant group's private label, it didn't take long for me to snap it up. I already knew the wine was absolutely delicious, and this was simply an opportunity to get the wine into the hands of our customers (and staff) at a ludicrously good price. This is a benchmark Sauv Blanc made with care and attention. The flavors are balanced and poised, and the texture and length on the palate are excellent. Floral notes of orchard blossom and Plumeria lead into freshly peeled citrus, ripe lemon, grapefruit, and Feijoa (if you know, you know). The palate has enough textural presence and weight to balance the mouth-watering acidity, and the finish trails off slowly with repeating citrus tones laced with wet stone minerals. This is one to stock up on, you're going to want a bottle of this chilled down and ready to go all summer long, and this is a one-time price for a very classy wine. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2019 Marietta "Román" North Coast Zinfandel]( Marietta "Román" North Coast Zinfandel]( ($19.95) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2019 Román Zinfandel (blended with 4% Barbera and 2% Petite Sirah) has a medium ruby-purple color and gregarious scents of candied peach, wild berry preserves, orange peel and tar. The palate is deeply fruited but light on its feet with bright freshness and loads of perfume on the long finish. (EB)" (06/2021) 93 points James Suckling: "A juicy, fruity red with blackberry, plum and chocolate character. Medium-to full-bodied with round, integrated tannins and a juicy finish. Some slate and earth to the fruit in the aftertaste." (07/2021) [ryanwoodhouse.gif]( Woodhouse]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 01, 2021 One of the best values you're likely to find anywhere. Here at K&L, we've been longtime believers in and supporters of Marietta. We've known for many years that these wines over-deliver time and time again, and they've been consistent "Staff Picks" in all of our stores. So, imagine our delight when a recent edition of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate bestowed enormous scores upon the wines! I mean, how often do you see $20 wines get 95 points from the Wine Advocate?! It's truly a unicorn wine. And the best part—the accolades are truly deserved. Marietta's "Román" bottling is a selection of some of their finest barrels of estate grown Zinfandel (with a splash of Petite Sirah and Barbera) named in homage to their longtime cellar master, Román Cisneros. This bottling is about the craft of making a truly special wine, blending fruit from McDowell Valley, Yorkville Highlands, and Alexander Valley to create the best expression of the vintage. The wine is broad, powerful, and layered. The nose is wonderfully open and expressive with floral high notes and crushed summer berries. On the palate, there's tons of those ripe berry fruits, blackberry, olallieberry, and raspberry preserve. There's mulling spice too. Then warm earth and woodsy spice tones. Medium to full bodied, richly fruited, but plenty of energy and vibrancy too. A truly complete bottle of wine. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2020 TWR (Te Whare Ra) Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough]( TWR (Te Whare Ra) Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough]( ($19.99) 94 points Sam Kim: "Fabulously fruited and inviting, the bouquet shows Granny Smith apple, feijoa and kaffir lime aromas with a hint of oatmeal. It's brilliantly bright and focused on the palate, delivering excellent fruit power together with textured mouthfeel backed by firm acidity, finishing persistent and delicious." (11/2020) 93 points Bob Campbell: "Lush, ripe Sauvignon Blanc with attractive passionfruit, red capsicum, lime zest and citrus flavours supported by juicy acidity. A punchy wine with a pleasing texture" (04/2021) 93 points James Suckling: "The intensity and freshness here is hard to beat in this hotly contested category, and the intensity of peach, green-mango, lime and grapefruit flavors is impressive. Long, juicy and mouthwateringly fresh." (11/2020) [Thomas-Smith.jpg]( Smith]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 24, 2021 The 2020 Te Whare Ra Sauvignon Blanc is unequivocally the best Sauvignon Blanc we carry at K&L. While most people love the bright, tropical Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs that are widely available, the quality produced by TWR is on a completely different level, starting with Anna and Jason Flowerday, the wife-and-husband team behind the wines. Jason is the most in-demand viticulturist in Marlborough, and Anna is one of the region's most respected winemakers. Together they farm their tiny, historic vineyard just outside the Marlborough village of Renwick. The wines at TWR are boutique and hand-crafted. Production levels are about 5% of most Marlborough producers, and they craft their exquisite wines with an attention to detail you can only find in small-scale operations. The 2020 vintage is one of my favorite recent vintages of this New Zealand staple. Elegantly styled, with notes of oyster shell, passionfruit, and lime zest with a gorgeously lush texture from delicate aging on the lees. With brilliant, mouth-watering acidity and balance that is sheer perfection, this will redefine your perspective on Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2016 Remelluri "Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida" Rioja]( Remelluri "Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida" Rioja]( ($27.99) 94 points James Suckling: "A tightly wound red with deep, dark fruit with lots of chocolate and spice. Medium-to full-bodied with lovely density and nature. Fine, creamy tannins and a flavorful finish. Subtle and real." (11/2020) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida, from a high-yielding year, matured in a combination of barriques of different origins and aged for 13 months. It has contained ripeness, integrated alcohol, nice balance and a nice expression on the nose. It shows more restraint than the one from San Vicente. I think the year shows the character of each village quite faithfully, and this time I prefer the Labastida again. It has a nice thread on the palate, velvety textured with very fine tannins. (LG)" (10/2019) [kirkwalker.jpg]( Walker]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 25, 2021 There is a fruit tone in this wine that smashes the buttons to the pleasure centers in my brain. It is red fruited, but it is hard to pin down. It is not cherry, not pomegranate, not açai berry, but it has the easiness of the cherry and flirts with the concentration of pomegranate and that earthy, tart edge of açai. However I try to describe it, it tastes and finishes like Rioja from the Alavesa subzone, which is exactly what this is. The Lindes de Remelluri is a product line that started when Telmo Rodriguez came back to make wine at his family's estate. He wanted the flagship Reserva to only be made with their own fruit, but they had contracts with many local farmers who had been supplying them with great fruit for their flagship wine for years. You don't just give up organically grown fruit. You start something new. He created two bottlings to highlight the terroir of two of the most famous villages in Alavesa, Labastida and San Vicente. The Labastida is located closer to the mountains where the soils have limestone and calcareous clays, and the wines from here are more aromatic, structured, and have that limestone energy. That is exactly what this wine delivers. You will notice that the wine has no classification for its aging in the cellar. It has spent 12 months in French oak of various ages and sizes. They want the classification of this wine to be done by region and village, rather than time in oak and bottle. That being said, this wine drinks almost like a Reserva. It is intense, with good tannins and well-integrated oak. This wine feels like a Reserva, but it does not smell or taste like a traditional oaky Reserva. This is Rioja Alavesa, from Labastida! An incredible bottle of wine that gets better the longer that you have it opened, and with an exceptional vintage like 2016, it will age nicely for at least another 10 years. Please give this a good decant, as your patience will be greatly rewarded. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2017 Trimbach "Sélection de Vieilles Vignes" Riesling Alsace]( Trimbach "Sélection de Vieilles Vignes" Riesling Alsace]( ($42.99) 96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Initial smoky notes of reduction make way for a pervasive, subtle but luminous lemon freshness on the nose of this wine. The palate shows exquisite concentration in lemon freshness. It's bone dry, vivid and fresh. *#2 Wine of 2020 Enthusiast 100, Editors' Choice* (AK)" (05/2020) 95 points James Suckling: "Solid white with density and searing dryness and minerality that is very impressive with sliced apples, lemons and white peaches. Super energy." (07/2019) [alexp.gif]( Pross]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: May 24, 2021 Trimbach is one of Alsace's greatest producers, and the 2017 Trimbach "Sélection de Vieilles Vignes" Riesling is a special bottling only made in special vintages when Trimbach believes the conditions were just right to produce this stellar offering. Right off the bat this wine starts off with beautiful aromas of ocean breeze, petrol, crushed stone, and lemon zest, while the palate is electric with orchard fruits, citrus, almond skin, chalk, and mineral flavors. With more body and heft than the Riesling Réserve, this wine has the amazing ability to balance structure, elegance, complexity, and weight all while feeling light and airy. This is a beautiful Riesling that is ready to drink now but will handsomely reward 10+ years of cellaring as well. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2016 Salvestrin "Dr. Crane Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Elsewhere $70)]( Salvestrin "Dr. Crane Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Elsewhere $70)]( ($49.95) 94+ points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Dr. Crane Vineyard is a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. It has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and an earthy nose with kirsch, black berries, cassis and baking spices plus cigar hints. The palate is medium to full-bodied, plush, intense and earthy, finishing long and spicy. (LPB)" (12/2018) 93 points James Suckling: "Bright and ripe blueberries and plums with blackcurrants and a rich array of coffee-flavored oak that adds nice depth to the finish. A blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and a dash of Cabernet Franc." (11/2018) [ryanwoodhouse.gif]( Woodhouse]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 12, 2021 It is an exceptionally rare opportunity to load up on top-notch Napa Cabernet from an exceptional vintage and a world-renowned vineyard for this kind of price. In the late 1800s, Dr. Beldon Crane planted vineyards on his ranch in St. Helena, Napa Valley. Now divided among a few different owners, this magical terroir has stood the test of time and these grapes are still some of the most sought after in the valley. The Salvestrin family, now living in Dr. Crane's beautiful residence, surrounded by vines, are lucky enough to have some of the choicest parcels of the original ranch. The wine itself is deeply fruited and quite brooding: aromas and flavors of ripe plum, blackcurrant, warm loamy earth, cigar box, mocha, and subtle leather. Plenty of richness and fruit on the palate, but it also retains quite a classic style with a nod to Bordeaux. Drinking well now with tons of primary fruit, but I believe this will also be a nice prospect for the cellar; some of those savory nuances bode well for complex development down the road in a decade or two. A stunning value given the quality and pedigree. You only have to do a quick web search for "Dr. Crane Vineyard" to see the astronomical prices some of the neighbors charge. Salvestrin, a well-established, family-owned winery, has captured the wonderful qualities of the legendary site, and you can enjoy it for a very modest price. Finite quantities of this excellent 2016 bottling are available, so don't miss it. --------------------------------------------------------------- [Prohibition Craft Spirits "NULU Reserve" California Exclusive Batch #CA1 Barrel Proof Small Batch CA1 Indiana Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)]( Craft Spirits "NULU Reserve" California Exclusive Batch #CA1 Barrel Proof Small Batch CA1 Indiana Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)]( ($64.99) Prohibition Craft Spirits is based in Louisville, KY and distills its own spirits while also sourcing from MGP in Indiana. Founded by Keith Hazelbaker, the little distillery in downtown Louisville has made a name for itself bottling cask-strength single barrels of high-quality bourbon distilled up north. The bar/distillery operation is located in the historic Highland's neighborhood and has quickly become a destination for bourbon lovers looking to acquire their well-regarded single barrels. The only thing better than a great single barrel, however, is an incredible small batch. Marrying casks from four to six years old, PCS has crafted an incredibly balanced and complex batch of cask-strength, non-chillfiltered bourbon. It's a truly hands on operation, and they've taken every care in creating this exceptional little batch for the California market. [David-otheningirard.jpg]( Othenin-Girard]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: August 10, 2021 I was really excited to see the NULU products making their way out to California, but when I found out that they'd be offering us a unique small batch, instead of the typical single barrel, I just about bought the entire batch. There's no question that we fetishize the single barrel in our industry, and while they offer unparalleled uniqueness, few single barrels can stand up to a well-crafted small batch in terms of balance and complexity. This gorgeous little batch of Indiana bourbon is the perfect example. Let's taste it. The color is yellow gold. The nose starts out a bit restrained before opening up considerably with just a few minutes in the glass. Aromas of sweet corn oil, caramel candy, toasted vanilla, and yellow fruit. Wonderfully supple on the palate, with an oily texture and some strong barrel spice coming through on the back end. It turns out to be a quite a big, spicy one with building pepper and clove heat. The richness keeps it in check, and altogether this is incredibly enjoyable bourbon! --------------------------------------------------------------- [2018 O'Shaughnessy Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon]( O'Shaughnessy Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon]( ($74.95) 97 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is such an outstanding wine at any price, but here were talking about outstanding value as well. Notes of iron and crushed rock lead to a lengthy balance of juicy red fruit and clove. With small amounts of Merlot, Malbec, Saint-Macaire and Cabernet Franc, it shows a deft hand at blending, with lasting notes of black pepper and nuanced oak. *Editors' Choice* (VB)" (07/2021) [ryanwoodhouse.gif]( Woodhouse]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 08, 2021 Every year at Premier Napa Valley, we attend several large regional tastings. One of the strongest events is always the "Friends and Neighbors" event typically held at Auberge du Soleil at the foot of Howell Mountain. Once inside this bustling tasting, one of the highlights for me is always the O'Shaughnessy table. I've long admired how their wines capture the power and structure of the region without ever seeming over the top or out of balance. Their Napa Valley bottling featured here, combines top notch estate holdings from Howell Mountain, Mt. Veeder, and Oakville, and fashions them into one seamless beauty of a wine. They also have a full array of Bordeaux varieties planted on the various estates, so while this wine is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, it also incorporates Cab Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and typically tiny amounts of other rarely-seen grapes such as Carménère and Saint-Macaire. The wine is rich, dense, and powerful, but at the same time, pure and elegant with lots energy and wonderful perfume. There's structure to age, but this is also wonderfully accessible and expressive as a young wine, a fantastic representation of this top Napa vintage and the pedigree of this benchmark producer. Not to mention an absolute steal for $75! --------------------------------------------------------------- [2016 Pauillac de Latour, Pauillac]( Pauillac de Latour, Pauillac]( ($95.99) 94 points James Suckling: "Lots of mineral, crushed stone, iodine and graphite with blackcurrants and blackberries that follow through to a medium body with ultra fine tannins that are ever so polished and give length and energy to the wine. Drinkable now, but even better in 2023." (04/2021) [clydebeffa.gif]( Beffa Jr.]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 21, 2021 2016 was a great vintage in Bordeaux, especially in the northern Médoc. This baby Latour is awesome. So integrated and seamless. Red rose and cassis aromas, red berry fruit flavors, and very round tannins. Great texture on the palate. One of their best in years. Drink this while you wait for 2016 Latour to be offered for sale. [Alex-Schroeder.jpg]( Schroeder]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 29, 2021 The third label of the First Growth Château Latour is a relatively affordable hint at the greatness of the Grand Vin in any vintage. In a superb vintage like 2016, I'd say it's more than a hint. The nose is really expressive here. Full of roses, red currants, cherries, graphite, sweet baking spice, and toast. Ripe fruit leads to a full-bodied texture, balanced nicely by firm tannin structure and a great level of acidity. The finish lasts nearly a minute. As pleasant as the wine is now, it's still relatively young and has tons of aging potential. I'd love to run into this in my cellar ten years from now. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2008 Billecart-Salmon "Cuvée Elisabeth" Brut Rosé Champagne]( Billecart-Salmon "Cuvée Elisabeth" Brut Rosé Champagne]( ($199.99) 98 points Decanter: "A superb vintage of this renowned prestige cuvée, this is made from a base of 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay, to which is added 9% of red wine. Despite ageing on its lees for 10 years, it remains almost shockingly youthful, its vividly primary flavours of red cherry, strawberry and nectarine wrapped up in a taut, tense frame. Its silky in texture and intricately complex on the long, elegantly harmonious finish, underlined by a saline chalkiness, and it demonstrates all the requisite completeness and character for long ageing, promising a slow and dignified evolution to come. (PL)" (05/2021) 98 points James Suckling: "This is very vinous with aromas of iron, strawberries, old roses and geraniums. So aromatic. Full-bodied, really intense and layered with super dryness and depth. Lots of saline and spicy character at the end, such as clove and pepper, as well as hints of flowers and melted butter. Strawberry tart at the end. 17% in aged oak casks. Blend of 55% pinot noir from six villages (Mareuil sur Ay, Ay, Bouzy, Ambonnay, Verzenay and Verzy) and 45% chardonnay from three Grand Crus (Mesnil sur Oger, Cramant and Chouilly). 9% of the blend is red wine from a parcel in the village of Mareuil sur Ay. Bottled June 2009 and disgorged July 2019." (05/2021) 97+ points Vinous: "The 2008 Brut Rosé Cuvée Elisabeth Salmon explodes from the glass with a mesmerizing array of aromas, flavors and textures. Blood orange, cinnamon, mint and dried flowers. The 2008 is incredibly young, but it is also incredibly tempting. Patience will be rewarded. In the meantime, readers might enjoy adding a few bottles of the stellar 2007 to their cellars, as the nervy, taut 2008 needs time. The 2008 is 55% Pinot Noir (from Aÿ, Verzy, Verzenay and Mareuil) and 45% Chardonnay (from Chouilly, Avize and Cramant), with 9% still wine from Mareuil. It is the first vintage that includes a portion of wines (17%) done in barrel and the first vintage in which the magnums were aged on the cork rather than on crown seal. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. (AG)" (03/2021) [gary.gif]( Westby]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: May 28, 2021 Cinnamon and I enjoyed this wine on its own at first, but later I made a little wasabi and ponzu tuna mousse to go with it, and the spicy, savory food worked very well with the Champagne. It has a very intriguing color with both pink and copper hues and a gorgeous, miniscule streamer of bubbles. The bouquet has not only dark maraschino cherry and pastry toast, but also a chalk note that foreshadows the finish. In the mouth, the wine has Vosne-Romanée-like dark fruit and savor that is seamlessly integrated with a line of refreshing acidity and pure minerality that put most 2008 brut tête de cuvées to shame. This wine has a finish that not only goes on but seems to expand in the mouth. After 13 years, this wine can be enjoyed easily now, but I am convinced that its very best days are still ahead. This wine is for the ages. --------------------------------------------------------------- [New Feed]( [Auction]( [Local]( --------------------------------------------------------------- [On the Trail (K&L Blog)]( --------------------------------------------------------------- [Instagram]( [YouTube]( [Facebook]( [Twitter]( --------------------------------------------------------------- [BORDEAUX]( | [NAPA]( | [BURGUNDY]( | [CHAMPAGNE]( | [ITALY]( | [RHÔNE]( | [SPIRITS]( --------------------------------------------------------------- [My Account]( | [Wine Clubs]( | [Events]( |[Gift Cards]( | [Accessories]( | [Delivery]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Missed an offer?
