It is medium-full-bodied, fastidiously clean and exceptionally well-balanced with perfectly placed acidity lending great energy and length, and, even if a thoroughly appealing wine right now, hurried drinking is not necessary. There is every reason to expect that, as well-made Sauvignon Blanc is wont to do, it will age wonderfully for a good many years. *One Star*" K&L Notes: Judd’s Hill Winery started with Bunnie and Art Finkelstein making wine in a garage in the 1970s. Their son, Judd took his first steps stomping on grapes. In addition to their winemaking endeavors, they are a family of musicians and artists. Art had a successful career as an architect. He designed and built Whitehall Lane Winery, where he continued as a commercial winemaker. When he sold Whitehall Lane in 1988, Art and Bunnie purchased a 14-acre hillside vineyard in the eastern hills of Napa. This is where Judd’s Hill Winery was born, designed and built by Art of course. Bunnie curates a collection of wine-related poems on the winery’s official website, while Judd creates web-series and radio shows. This is a classic Napa Sauvignon Blanc, with lots of fruit notes on the nose – gooseberry, lime, lemongrass, honeydew melon. Try it with some tarragon chicken, assorted cheeses, and other picnic favorites. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2018 Almarada Malbec Uco Valley Mendoza]( Almarada Malbec Uco Valley Mendoza]( ($10.99) James Suckling: "Briary nose with blueberry and currant aromas, as well as herbs. The palate has a meaty edge and drying tannins." (02/2020) Wine Enthusiast: "Soft berry aromas hint at prune, while this feels jammy and a bit raisiny. Blueberry, black plum and raisin flavors conclude on a warm and fleshy finish. (MS)" (10/2020) K&L Notes: Malbec, the flagship grape of Argentina, hardly needs an introduction. You can find good quality Malbec at every price level. Uco Valley, where this wine gets its grapes from, is an important subregion that boasts some of Mendoza’s highest altitude vineyards including La Arboleda vineyard, which is about 3100 feet above sea level. You’ll find slightly higher acidity due to the high altitude and diurnal temperature difference. Bold, ripe, dark plum flavors in the foreground with oak and earth in the background. Of course, you can’t go wrong with grilled meats to pair this with, but our South America buyer Kirk recommends hot dog mac ‘n’ cheese. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2019 Field Recordings "Wonderwall" Edna Valley Pinot Noir]( Field Recordings "Wonderwall" Edna Valley Pinot Noir]( ($14.99) K&L Notes: Field Recordings is a small winery in Paso Robles started by Andrew Jones, who began his wine journey as a nursery vine grower and has stepped foot in nearly all the vineyards on the Central Coast of California. All his vineyard expertise is translated into his bottled wines, Field Recordings and Wonderwall (and also wine-in-a-can under the labels Alloy Wine Works and Fiction). The Wonderwall house style features limited stem inclusion to add spice and bring out the fruit. The grapes are picked right before the peak of ripeness, not allowing the fruit to get overripe, achieving a tart cherry characteristic with hints of fig and cola. The result is light-bodied, medium acid, with smooth, soft tannins. At 12.9% ABV, feel free to chill it down slightly. This is a perfect wine to have on hand while mingling and snacking. Alternatively, order a Peking duck and some Chinese BBQ. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2016 La Fleur de Boüard, Lalande-de-Pomerol]( La Fleur de Boüard, Lalande-de-Pomerol]( ($24.99) 93 points James Suckling: "Fragrant and spicy, ripe and juicy with a ton of crushed berry character. The generous, supple tannins nicely support the full body and long, silky finish." (02/2019) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 La Fleur de Boüard is blended of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and is a little youthfully reticent to begin, giving way to provocative crushed rocks, tilled soil, mossy bark and cigar box scents over a core of blueberry compote, black raspberries and blackberry pie with a waft of dried herbs. Medium to full-bodied, the earth-laced palate is positively charged with energy, framed by very fine-grained tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing on a lingering mineral note. (LPB)" (03/2019) 92 points Vinous: "The 2016 La Fleur de Boüard is gorgeous. Sweet, floral notes lift the red berry fruit in this gracious, mid-weight wine. Raspberry, wild flowers, mocha, spice and mint all run through this lithe, silky wine. The 2016 possesses notable silkiness, nuance and finesse. This is a terrific showing. (AG)" (01/2019) --------------------------------------------------------------- [2018 The Geologist Bolgheri Rosso]( The Geologist Bolgheri Rosso]( ($24.99) 92 points James Suckling: "Aromas of black cherry, blueberry, clove, walnut and mahogany. Savory herb, olive and pine-cone notes, too. Its full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins. Polished and rich with a spiced finish." (02/2021) [gregstclair.gif]( St. Clair]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 03, 2021 It is not often that I start out to write about a wine and say "Irish Geologist, Dr. Neil McMahon". The label does not say "Hey, I'm Irish" either. McMahon and his family made the move to Bolgheri for a few reasons: 1) Bolgheri does not have the history that many other Tuscan DOCs have, so Neil is not bound by tradition in winemaking; and 2) he wanted to make wine from non-indigenous varieties that have flourished around the world and have far more scientific research done on them. Finally, the coastal location gives him a more even and consistent growing climate. His enologist is Sean O'Callahan, who worked for years in Chianti Classico at Riecine, made superb wines, and now has his own winery called Tenuta di Carleone. This wine is a classic Bolgheri blend of 20% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon that shows lots of dark fruit and a bit of tannin. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2017 Comartin "Tierra Alta Vineyard" Ballard Canyon Grenache]( Comartin "Tierra Alta Vineyard" Ballard Canyon Grenache]( ($24.99) K&L Notes: Despite its southerly latitude, Santa Barbara is home to the California’s coolest wine regions. The coastal mountains run from east to west here rather than the usual north-south direction of most U.S. ranges. The county has direct exposure to the ocean, its brisk afternoon winds, and chilly night-time fog. This means that ripening is slower, and grapes can be harvested later, when flavor and phenolic ripeness reach their maximum. The Ballard Canyon AVA lies east of Highway 101 and specializes in various Rhône varieties. Tierra Alta Vineyard, “The High Land,” is perched on top of Ballard Canyon in the Santa Ynez Valley. On the nose and palate, this wine features deep, roasted cherries with dried herbs in the background. It is soft, silky, medium-bodied, and has a smooth finish. Perfect for a simple dinner of roasted meats and vegetables. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2018 Domaine de la Butte "Les Côteaux du Levant" Bourgueil]( Domaine de la Butte "Les Côteaux du Levant" Bourgueil]( ($27.99) K&L Notes: Loire's rising star Jacky Blot, of Domaine de la Taille Aux Loups and Domaine de la Butte, started his career as a wine broker and now is responsible for putting Montlouis-sur-Loire on the quality map. Over the years, he's put together 12 hectares of ancient vineyards in Montlouis, Vouvray, and Bourqueil, acquired from families who could no longer care for them. This comes from an old-vine parcel in Bourgueil with ideal southern exposure. All the vines planted here are 50-plus years old and bear fruit of great intensity and minerality. The wine absolutely requires decanting, but after a half hour in the decanter, it opens up beautifully and reveals a surprisingly full-bodied, spice-laden palate with bright red fruits, innate savory qualities, and well-integrated tannin. One of the challenges of Cabernet Franc in the cool climate of Bourgueil is to produce wines with enough body and fruit to balance out the variety’s tendency toward bell pepper and astringent tannin. Jacky is a master of his wine and has managed not only to produce a perfectly balanced Cabernet Franc here, but to present it with a flourish of layered and nuanced flavors. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2018 Philippe Leclerc Bourgogne Rouge "Les Bons Bâtons"]( Philippe Leclerc Bourgogne Rouge "Les Bons Bâtons"]( ($29.99) K&L Notes: Philippe grew up in the vineyards and learned to tend vines from his father. He produced his first vintage in 1979 and has since garnered a loyal following. His family has owned land in Gevrey-Chambertin for over a hundred years and still makes wine according to the Burgundian traditions. The wine undergoes a cool maceration for about 15 days, followed by 15 days of fermentation. The cap is trodden by foot three times per day and aged in 30-50% new French oak barrels. The finished wine is unfined and unfiltered. The fruit for this wine come from Les Bons Bâtons, a small vineyard (less than 2 acres), located across the main road from Chambolle-Musigny. The vineyard is one of the few Bourgogne-level designations allowed to carry the vineyard name, and that is unsurprising given its proximity to Chambolle-Musigny. They share the same soil, light, and vine positions, and the quality is closer to that of a 1er Cru than village level. This bottle will benefit from some breathing time. Mushroom and wet forest floor at first but after an hour, wild strawberries and red cherries jump out of the glass. This is a great food wine, with amazing structure from moderate levels of acid and tannin. Try it with carnitas tacos or a vegetarian version with mushrooms. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2019 Dominique & Janine Crochet "Le Chene Marchand" Sancerre]( Dominique & Janine Crochet "Le Chêne Marchand" Sancerre]( ($29.99) K&L Notes: From one of the most hallowed vineyards in Sancerre and made by the scion of one of the pre-eminent families in the appellation, Dominique Crochet's Les Chêne Marechand Sancerre is a gorgeously expressive wine. This vineyard near the village of Bué annually produces some of the most complex and collectible Sauvignon Blanc on the planet. This is another favorite of our wine club. A classic Sancerre with a little more body. It’s got all the telltale signs of a great Sauvignon Blanc—prominent lime zest, gooseberry, and honey dew notes—but it also has weight. The grapes are from an old vineyard plot dubbed “Le Chêne Marchand.” It faces south where the grapes ripen effortlessly to produce a wine that’s bolder and richer. At 14.5% ABV, you’ll be surprised to find that there’s still a good amount of acidity. Another source for the body in this wine is the use of large, neutral oak barrels during the aging process. We recommend a chicken or fish pairing with a rich sauce. --------------------------------------------------------------- [New Feed]( [Auction]( [Local]( --------------------------------------------------------------- [On the Trail (K&L Blog)]( --------------------------------------------------------------- [Instagram]( [Instagram]( [Facebook]( [Twitter]( --------------------------------------------------------------- [BORDEAUX]( | [NAPA]( | [BURGUNDY]( | [CHAMPAGNE]( | [ITALY]( | [RHÔNE]( | [SPIRITS]( --------------------------------------------------------------- [My Account]( | [Wine Clubs]( | [Events]( |[Gift Cards]( | [Accessories]( | [Delivery]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Missed an offer?
