The palate is medium-bodied with good backbone, a little edginess coming through with aeration, although it remains stubborn and linear on the finish. It just needs barrel aging to knit the component parts together. Presuming that it does, then it will be a fine Saint Emilion. (NM)" (04/2015) [2014 Tour St-Christophe, St-Émilion]( [2014 Tour St-Christophe, St-Émilion]( ($22.99) 93-94 points James Suckling: "This is a stunning barrel sample with oyster shells, blackberries, chalk, blueberries. Full body, great density of fruit and power. Best yet?" (03/2015) 90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Château Tour Saint Christophe 2014 has a very pure bouquet. There is some new oak to be subsumed, but there is plenty of fruit to support it. The palate is ripe and sensual on the entry with supple tannin, plush black cherry and blackberry fruit with a generous, modern-style opening with commendable length. This could turn out to be one of Saint Emilion's classier offerings in 2014. (NM)" (04/2015) 91 points Vinous: "The 2014 Tour Saint-Christophe is opulent and full-throttle in style, with plenty of up-front fruit to match its racy, open-knit personality. Violets, blackberry jam, spices and new leather abound in a succulent St.-Emilion to enjoy over the next decade or so. A second sample was quite a bit firmer and more structured. It will be interesting to see which of the two samples turns out to be closer to the finished wine. The blend is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Tasted two times. (AG)" (04/2015) [2013 Fattoria Le Pupille "Poggio Valente" Riserva Morellino di Scansano (Pre-Arrival)]( ($29.99) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Morellino di Scansano Riserva Poggio Valente is a breakthrough wine for Fattoria le Pupille and its talented winemaking team. This is a complete and balanced expression that shows its best side to all the senses: its appearance is richly saturated and bright; the bouquet is intense and complex; and the mouthfeel shows elegance and power. In all, this wine tastes and feels much younger than it really is and I have high hopes for its future aging ability. It shows a great sense of inner energy and liveliness that makes it a pleasure to drink in the near term as well. Soft flavors of black cherry, spice and grilled herb wrap thickly over the palate. 95+ (ML)" (01/2017) 94 points James Suckling: "A fascinating pure Sangiovese with gorgeous blackberry and fresh mushroom character. Hints of spices. Full body yet bright and refined with a velvety tannin structure. Lovely complexity and savory character. Drink now." (11/2016) [2013 Antinori "Solaia" Toscana]( [2013 Antinori "Solaia" Toscana]( ($189.99) 97 points James Suckling: "Wow. This is a stylish young red with currant, light herb, spice and bark aromas and flavors. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh finish. Balanced and attractive now but better in 2020. A classic as always." (07/2016) 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Marchesi Antinori's 2013 Solaia is a profound and meaningful wine that is based mostly on Cabernet Sauvignon with Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc in supporting roles. It sports a dark and thick texture with plump fruit and spice, grilled herb and black pepper. The bouquet is intense and layered with the kind of complexity that is best admired as the wine shifts and evolves in the glass. The textual impact is also impressiveyou feel the inherent power and the structure, but these elements are never overdone. The best is yet to come; this Solaia is built for long cellar aging. 97+ (ML)" (12/2016) [2011 Musella Amarone della Valpolicella]( ($49.99) Wine Spectator: "Sun-dried cherry and currant fruit notes are framed by sculpted tannins in this medium-bodied red delivering fresh, loamy earth, grilled thyme and mocha flavors. Chewy finish. (AN, Web-2016)" [2012 Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon]( ($114.99) "Blue Chip." That is always one of the phrases I use when talking about the Silver Oak Napa Valley bottling. Year after year Silver Oak produces some of the most reliably delicious wine that Napa has to offer. It might not be most "culty," nor the highest rated on someone's 100 point scale but it is always exactly what you know it to be: rich, powerful, heavily fruited, laced with spicy oak and full of structure but still enjoyable upon release. Perfect for gifts, important client meetings, special dinners and a great mid-term wine for any smart collector this wine is always a safe and smart decision when looking for higher end bottling. (Bryan Brick, K&L) Brick]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: January 28, 2017 The 2012 Napa Valley bottling has been wildly anticipated for the last few months. Hot off of the fall release of the stunning 2012 Alexander Valley bottling, The Napa bottling has finally arrived. The first in a string of three outstanding Napa Cabernet vintages it is wildly apparent from the nose that this is a hallmark 2012. Known for its generosity and ripeness 2012 has charmed people over the last couple of years but its wines like the Silver Oak that vintages like these are really judged on.
Dark but with a juicy core of blue/black fruit highlighted by espresso and sweetened cocoa powder the nose here resonates and has plenty of weight and concentration. This enters velvety and full bodied and shines as it rolls along to the mid-palate. Full of swirling and complex flavors of brambly wild berry, chopped green olives, blueberry angel cake, pipe tobacco, and homemade chocolate brownies this is gulp-able and yet serious at the same time. Finishing with its signature oaky pinning and considerable tannin, fruit rather than oak, this is one stunner of a wine and easily the best Silver Oak Napa Valley bottling since 2007 or 2009. In a word: Tremendous. [2015 Kistler Sonoma Mountain Chardonnay]( ($64.99) [2015 Talley/K&L Wine Merchants Edna Valley Chardonnay]( ($24.99) This is a delicious collaboration between Talley winemaker Eric Johnson and our domestic buyer Bryan Brick. A wonderfully balanced, beautiful Chardonnay, if we do say so ourselves. [2014 Cloudline Willamette Valley Pinot Noir]( ($16.99) 90 points James Suckling: "A firm and chewy red with plum and berry character. Medium to full body and plenty of juicy fruit. Shows the structure of the vintage. Muscular and lively." (11/2016) [2015 Haut-Brisson, St-Émilion (Pre-Arrival)]( ($22.99) 94-95 points James Suckling: "A wonderful red with beautiful precision and depth. Full body, texture of fine silk. Blackberry and violet character. Hints of walnuts. So persistent. A much more refined style for Haut-Brission. First year without Reserve bottling. Best ever. From organically grown grapes." (04/2016) [2005 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac]( [2005 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac]( ($799.99) 98 points Vinous: "98+ points. One of the highlights in this vertical, the 2005 Mouton Rothschild is exceptional. Dark, powerful and explosive on the palate, the 2005 is endowed with magnificent depth and richness. Just at the early part of its drinking window, the 2005 is sure to drink well for many years from here, especially if it is given a little bit of air. The 2005 is a stunning Mouton, but it needs time to fully blossom. Harvest took place between September 21 and October 6. The blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and just 1% Cabernet Franc. (AG)" (05/2016) 98 points James Suckling: "This accelerates on the palate with incredibly ripe tannins and finesse. Full body, roasted fruit, leather and grilled meat. Dried flowers, too. It shows superb tannin backbone and polish. Tight and youthful. Just starting to open. Currant and berry undertones with lead pencil are impressive. Better in 2018 but so delicious now." (10/2015) 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Mouton Rothschild (85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc) has a sensational nose of crème de cassis and incense as well as a touch of lead pencil shavings and forest floor. Dense purple, this is one of the biggest, richest wines I tasted from the Médoc. It is full-bodied, pure, and impressively endowed. Certainly the selection process and the vineyard have come through in admirable form. This wine has a certain accessibility due to the sweetness of the tannin, but it is multidimensional, with a majestic mouthfeel and length. Drink it over the next 30+ years. (RP)" (06/2015) [2015 Saint Cosme Côtes du Rhône]( [2015 Saint Cosme Côtes du Rhône]( ($12.99) 91 points Wine Spectator: "#43 Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2016!! Ripe, with vivid blueberry and boysenberry fruit, harnessed on the back end by a bold graphite edge. Anise and violet notes add range. Drink now through 2019. 25,000 cases made. (JM)" (11/2016) K&L Notes: It's unusual to see 100% Syrah coming out of the southern Rhone but this has become one of the signature wines of prestigious Gigondas producer Chateau de Saint Cosme. The fruit comes from the Vinsobres appellation in the northern part of the southern Rhone and the terraces of the Villefranchian subregion on the Gard side of the Rhone River. Imbued with the full flavor and richness that Syrah provides and from this exceptional 2015 vintage, you can't go wrong with this pleasing and intense French red. Mabry]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 06, 2016 At once inviting and incredibly rich, the 2015 captures the essence of both this gorgeous vintage and the qualities that make Saint Cosme one of Gigondas' top producers. This is loaded with brambly black raspberry fruit, leaning towards Chambord in its concentration. Plenty of Asian spices and some dusty minerality on the finish round out the profile. The freshness of fruit that is 2015 is also exhibited with lovely acidity to keep everything focused and in balance. Saint Cosme makes benchmark Gigondas that rivals and often surpasses Chateauneuf wines to the south, try this gorgeous Rhone that captures many of those elements for a fraction of the price. [2001 d'Yquem, Sauternes (375ml)]( [2001 d'Yquem, Sauternes (375ml)]( - 12 available ($399.99) 100 points James Suckling: "This is so layered and intense on the palate with lemons and dried pineapple, mango and honey. Full body, very sweet, but it remains tangy and vibrant. Shows such amazing balance and intensity. Crazy finish. Hints of vanilla and apple purée. One of the greatest Yquems ever. All about purity here." (09/2013) 100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There are 10,000 cases of this perfect sweet white Bordeaux. The 2001 Yquem reveals a hint of green in its light gold color. While somewhat reticent aromatically, with airing, it offers up honeyed tropical fruit, orange marmalade, pineapple, sweet creme brulee, and buttered nut-like scents. In the mouth, it is full-bodied with gorgeously refreshing acidity as well as massive concentration and unctuosity. Everything is uplifted and given laser-like focus by refreshing acidity. This large-scaled, youthful Yquem appears set to take its place among the most legendary vintages of the past, and will age effortlessly for 75+ years. (RP)" (04/2005) 100 points Wine Spectator: "The greatest young Yquem I have ever tasted from bottle. Yellow, with a golden hue and an almost green tint. Intense aromas of botrytis, spices and blanched almonds follow through to honey, maple syrup, dried apricot and pineapple. Full-bodied, sweet, thick and powerful, with layers of fruit and a bright, lively finish. Coats the palate yet remains exciting. So balanced and refined, showing the pedigree that only this Sauternes estate can deliver. Best after 2012." (11/2005) Jancis Robinson: "Magnum. A marvellous wine with a fabulous future but already redolent of crème brulée and marzipan. Great intensity, balance and lift. Fresh, medium sweetness (which looks an awfully prosaic description of this miracle of botrytis) and fresh and crisp on the finish. 19.5/20 points. Drink to 2050 (JR)" (02/2014) [2014 Bodegas Abanico Hazaña Viñas Viejas Rioja]( [2014 Bodegas Abanico Hazaña Viñas Viejas Rioja]( ($10.99) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Hazana Vinas Viejas is simply one of the greatest values in Rioja that money can buy. A blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano, this collaboration between importer Eric Solomon and the owner and winemaker has produced an absolutely amazing Rioja from 45- to 70-year-old unirrigated, head-pruned vines. Loads of lead pencil shavings, black and red currants, licorice and tobacco leaf all jump from the glass of this dense, ruby/purple wine. Soft tannins, medium to full body and fabulous intensity, make for a sensational Rioja to drink over the next 5-7 years. If the good news. The good news, in addition to a drop-dead price point is that there are 20,000 cases imported to the U.S. (RP)" (07/2015) [2013 Chalk Hill "Estate" Chalk Hill Red Blend]( [2013 Chalk Hill "Estate" Chalk Hill Red Blend]( ($59.99) 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Proprietary Red Estate is a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Malbec, 12% Petit Verdot and the rest Carignane, Syrah and Merlot. This is another titanic effort from proprietor Foley. A spectacular dense-purple color and sweet toasty oak intermixed with licorice, blackberry, cassis and graphite are all present in this profound first-growth quality blend that should age effortlessly for 25-30 or more years. This is a stunner and a revelation. Chalk Hill Estate, the notable property that defined the Chalk Hill AVA, is now owned by William P. Foley II, an ambitious entrepreneur who has purchased a lot of top-end vineyards. (RP)" (03/2016) [2013 Dominus "Napanook" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend]( [2013 Dominus "Napanook" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend]( ($89.99) 97 points James Suckling: "Fabulous nose of mushrooms, like porcini, with black truffle that turns to citrus fruits such as orange and tangerine. Some vine bark. Full-bodied yet wonderfully firm and formed with refined and polished tannins. Super definition. Drink in 2018, but wonderful to experience." (01/2015) 95 points Vinous: "Just as magnificent from bottle as it was in barrel, the 2013 Napanook is dense, powerful and brooding, with searing intensity and extraordinary balance. Lavender, plums, violets, licorice and smoke are some of the signatures, but the 2013 exudes finesse, power and intensity. Bracing and searing, the 2013 is going to require quite a bit of patience. If anything, this is an insane level of quality for the second selection. The 2013 could turn out to be a thirty year old wine. It is every bit that magnificent, especially if given some aeration. (AG)" (10/2015) [2013 Quintessa Rutherford Bordeaux Blend]( [2013 Quintessa Rutherford Bordeaux Blend]( ($174.99) 98 points James Suckling: "This is really fantastic on the nose with blackberry, blueberry, lavender, and violets. Even sage. Full body plus extremely integrated tannins that are polished and refined. The balance and harmony is phenomenal. Goes on for minutes. Beautiful now but will satisfy for decades." (05/2016) 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Proprietary Red Wine has always been good, but I think they have re-positioned themselves at a much higher pinnacle with the 2013. This is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend but has important component parts such as Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot from their gorgeous vineyards just off the Silverado Trail in Rutherford. The wine has a dense bluish/purple color and a beautiful nose of black raspberries, blueberries, lead pencil shavings, and touches of oak and spring flowers. The complexity of the fragrance is followed by a wine with terrific body, stunning purity, wonderful balance, and great depth and richness. This is certainly the most profound Quintessa made to date and should evolve gracefully for at least 20-25 years. Quintessa is a magnificent estate in Rutherford, and this is the flagship wine of proprietor Agustin Huneeus. (RP)" (10/2015) [2012 Chalone "Estate Grown" Chalone Chardonnay (Elsewhere $26)]( Price: Hidden 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Done in a more oxidized style, this wine shows marzipan, dried apricot, browned butter, dried pineapple and a gunmetal flint character on the nose. The palate is very focused, with flavors of preserved lemon, lime rind, sage-roasted chicken and a faint minty element. (MK)" (11/2015) [2014 Beckmen "Estate Purisima Mountain" Ballard Canyon Syrah]( ($27.99) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A fabulous value that delivers on all accounts, the inky colored 2014 Syrah Purisima Mountain (100% Syrah aged 16 months in 35% new French oak) knocks it out of the park with its ripe, decadent black fruits, barbecue smoke, licorice and smoked meat-laced aromas and flavors. Rich, fat and unctuous on the palate, with plenty of freshness and purity, it tastes like it costs two to three times the price. (JD)" (08/2016) 92 points Vinous: "The 2014 Syrah Purisima Mountain Vineyard is dark, powerful and authoritative, within the mid-weight personality of the vintage. Black cherry, blackberry, graphite, spice and leather are all nicely pushed forward. Delineated and vibrant, the 2014 is pristine today. It should drink well for another handful of years. This is a fairly restrained, vibrant style for Ballard Canyon. (AG)" (09/2016) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Made from the clone that UC Davis extracted from Australian Shiraz, this is all about intense fruit. Aromas of licorice and blackberries give way to a palate lush with smoked blueberry, mocha, chocolate pudding, black rocks and a minty midpalate. The tannins will last awhile but this is ready now.
