Needs a year or two to soften." (02/2018) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "With a claim as the highest vineyard in Bordeaux (not that that means much), this estate has produced a powerful, rich wine that just avoids overripeness and moves into a more elegant style. Plenty of tannins still go with the dark-chocolate flavors and the black fruits. (RV)" (05/2019) [sharonkelly.jpg]( Kelly]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 15, 2020 What to drink with lamb steak cooked in cast iron and basted with butter and herbs? This is a FINE selection, as I recently discovered. I chose this wine because Fronsac is one of those regions in Bordeaux that isn't on everyone's radar, and only a small percentage (maybe 20%?) is exported. There are some very well-made wines in Fronsac that sit at a great price point. Personally, I enjoy finding and trying these values and recommending them to people looking for well crafted wines that will pleasantly surprise them. This shows blackberry and currant fruits, earth, cocoa plus the tannins are present on the palate, yet not aggressively so. Take a bite of buttery meat and a sip of this wine and you have yourself a wonderful wine pairing experience right there. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2019 TWR (Te Whare Ra) Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough]( [2019 TWR (Te Whare Ra) Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough]( ($19.99) 94 points Sam Kim: "Offering fabulous varietal purity and vibrancy, the wine shows green rockmelon, Gala apple, jalapeno and lime peel aromas on the nose with a hint of oatmeal complexity. It's delightfully weighted and persistent with fine texture and bright acidity, making it immediately appealing. Deliciously stylish. At its best: now to 2024." (02/2020) 92 points Bob Campbell: "Fresh, crisp, high-energy Sauvignon Blanc with appealingly pure lemongrass, lime juice, gooseberry and capsicum flavours. A refreshing wine from a hot, dry vintage where many wines lacked acidity." (01/2020) K&L Notes: Familiar to many of you by now, TWR is our longest-running Direct Import partner from NZ. Husband-and-wife team Jason and Anna Flowerday run this small organic vineyard in the heart of Marlborough. Truly one of the most incredible wineries in NZ today. The wines are pure, focused, flavorful, and laced with complex minerality. Our Direct Import relationship means that these wines represent some of the best values in the store when you factor in the quality of the wines produced and level of commitment shown. This Sauv Blanc is composed from "home block" fruit with a dash of their neighbors' fruit, plus fruit from another grower's vineyard in the Awatere valley. [Thomas-Smith.jpg]( Smith]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: April 07, 2020 I have been talking a lot about how strong I think the 2019 vintage for Sauvignon Blanc is for Marlborough, NZ. The long, dry hot spell that occurred over the summer leading up to harvest is showing fruit and ripeness that exceeds anything in recent memory. Smaller producers who could get their grapes off the vine early managed to get plenty of bold, ripe flavors while keeping bright acidity intact. Te Whare Ra executed this perfectly. They picked on March 1st of 2019, which was the earliest they have ever harvested. It absolutely shows in the glass. Never has there been such a pure, clean note of green apple, lime, and grapefruit, with beautiful aromatic bouquet on display. The lees contact is evident, and incredibly well-executed with substantial weight and hints of creme fraiche. A touch more forward for this producer, this has tons of vintage character and is representative of the best of Marlborough. ---------------------------------------------------------------
[2016 Sierra Cantabria "Unica" Reserva Rioja]( [2016 Sierra Cantabria "Unica" Reserva Rioja]( ($24.99) 94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 Reserva Unica comes from a single vineyard located in the alluvial soils beside the Ebro river. Made from 97% Tempranillo and 3% Graciano that was all destemmed and aged 24 months in 30% new French and America oak, this deep, concentrated 2016 packs some serious muscle in its blackcurrants, black cherry, licorice, toasted spice, and dried earth-like aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, with a dense, concentrated mid-palate and ripe tannins, give bottles a few years in a cold cellar and enjoy over the following 10-15 years." (11/2020) K&L Notes: The Eguren family that owns Bodegas Sierra Cantabria has been growing grapes in the Rioja Alavesa region since the 1870s, though it was not until the 1950s that they founded the bodega. True to their grape growing background, all the wines are made with fruit that they farm themselves. The Reserva Unica is a selection of the best barrels that would otherwise be destined for the regular Sierra Cantabria Reserva. It also just happens to be a single vineyard wine, located in the famous village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. It is aged in a mix of French and American oak barrels, with the majority of the barrels being French, 30% of which are new. This is a classic Reserva with a little extra polish on it from the French oak. [chrisdepaoli-new.jpg]( DePaoli]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 17, 2020 Good wine. Medium bodied, with a solid build softened by nice acid, this has smooth, firm tannins that are nicely integrated at this point but still present. Tart cherry and blackberry pushed over baking spice are all over the nose but the most interesting stage is the cool, saline finish that drives the next sip on. Really easy to drink, with the potential to pair wonderfully with winter fare. [AndrewTobin.jpg]( Tobin]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 17, 2020 I don't think Tempranillo gets the credit it deserves out of the wine world. We obsess over subregion after subregion in Burgundy (with good reason) but to many I think Tempranillo is just Tempranillo. This is a huge missed opportunity for most people, as not only is the wine fabulous and often much less painful for your wallet, there is a truly amazing spectrum of wine profiles from this very prolific grape. This little beauty is all about fruit and spice! The nose is berry pie that is surrounded by baking spice, white pepper, red licorice, tomato and sliced red peppers. The palate is lovely and medium bodied, the fruit is soft and round up front with notes of plum, cassis, and blackberry that lean out into a dusty and salty finish. No $25 red has any business being this interesting! Nowhere near the heft of a Cab and well bolder than a Pinot, this is that perfect middle ground and is definitely a contender for holiday dinner season. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2018 Chanin "Los Alamos Vineyard" Santa Barbara County Chardonnay (Elsewhere $40)]( [2018 Chanin "Los Alamos Vineyard" Santa Barbara County Chardonnay (Elsewhere $40)]( ($29.95) 95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Brought up in 20% new French oak, the 2018 Chardonnay Los Alamos reveals a light gold hue as well as a beautiful bouquet of stone fruits, toasted bread, almond paste, and honeysuckle. Beautifully textured, medium to full-bodied, and seamless on the palate, it's a gorgeous Chardonnay as well as a brilliant value!" (08/2020) 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Lemon blossom, light pecan and classic oak aromas show on the nose of this bottling. The chalky palate and fresh, lingering acidity ride through tight lines of lemon peel and vanilla, which extend deep into the finish. (MK)" (09/2020) 92 points Vinous: "The 2018 Chardonnay Los Alamos Vineyard is a very pretty, airy wine. Candied lemon peel, almond paste and chamomile are all laced together. Tangerine oil and tropical accents add an exotic flair as this mid-weight Chardonnay opens nicely in the glass. (AG)" (08/2020) --------------------------------------------------------------- [2014 Château Montus Madiran]( [2014 Château Montus Madiran]( ($29.99) 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is the latest release from this Madiran showpiece estate on steep vineyards surrounding a grand chateau. The wine is black, firm and full of tannins while allowing room for swathes of dark fruits and a bold structure. It is still in the aging process. *#51 Top 100 Cellar Selections 2018* (RV)" (06/2018) K&L Notes: Château Montus is the crown jewel in Alain Brumont's holdings. Purchased in 1980, it was Brumont's ideal property. Steep hillsides plus the gravelly vineyards with yellow and red clay subsoils made for one of the best terroirs in the region. The Montus is a blend of primarily Tannat with some Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes ferment in large wooden vats and the wine ages in a mix of used and about 60-80% new French oak depending on the vintage. The results are a seamless and inviting Madiran that defines the regional style. The perfect wine for the rich sausage and duck dishes famously made in the region. [keithmabry.gif]( Mabry]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: December 15, 2020 For many, Madiran remains undiscovered country. It is a wine region famous (almost infamous) for its broad-shouldered and impenetrable reds. That's if you've even heard of it. The main grape is Tannat and it is inky and chewy as a grape, maybe the most of both of those descriptions. But what vigneron and arbiter of all things Tannat Alain Brumont has done over the years is figure out how to make the suit fit those ever-so-broad-shoulders. In some cases, he blends a bit of Cab Franc and in this case, he blends in a little Cab Sauv. He uses low yields and strict selection to elevate the fruit and aromatic qualities of the grapes. And, he uses micro-oxygenation to round out some of the grippier tannins. And like a tailor he measures the perfect fit. Full-bodied, filled with blackcurrant, tar, violets, bay and mint notes, it is complex and long. To use another analogy, it meets somewhere between Bordeaux and Barolo in style. Mouth-filling, savory and memorable. I had this with some stewed beans and sausage. With Brumont as a master tailor, the bespoke suit that is Montus is impressive and built to last. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2018 Anthill Farms "Hawk Hill Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir]( [2018 Anthill Farms "Hawk Hill Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir]( ($46.95) 96 points Wine Enthusiast: "From the cool climes of Freestone, just miles from the Pacific Ocean, this vineyard designate captures all the feral, crisp and complex aspects of site and variety in the right hands. Carbonic, with euphoric red raspberry and strawberry flavors, it is textured, savory and endlessly bright. (VB)" (11/2020) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Pinot Noir Hawk Hill Vineyard is the second iteration of this single-vineyard cuvée, which was made with 25% new French and Austrian oak and 50% whole clusters. Medium ruby-purple, it offers gorgeous aromas of charcuterie, rhubarb, blackberries and aniseed with loads of earthy accents in the undercurrent and top notes of potpourri. The palate is medium-bodied and über satiny with slowly blossoming flavor layers. It walks a beautiful line between concentration of flavor and a light-footed frame, and it finishes very long with addicting juiciness and nuance. Wow! (EB)" (08/2020) 93-95 points Vinous: "The 2018 Pinot Noir Hawk Hill is one of the more refined wines in this range. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, mint, chalk and blood orange give this mid-weight Pinot striking aromatic presence. Understated, vibrant and classy, the 2018 is so finessed and so sculpted. It is one of my favorites in this range. (AG)" (04/2020) --------------------------------------------------------------- [2016 Galerie "Latro" Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Elsewhere $65)]( [2016 Galerie "Latro" Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Elsewhere $65)]( Price: Hidden 95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Latro is in the same ballpark yet has more savory characteristics as well as plenty of conifer, California bay leaf, currants, and loamy soil aromas and flavors. This full-bodied beauty has plenty of tannin, terrific purity of fruit, no hard edges, and a great finish. Give it a few years. 95+" (01/2019) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One-hundred percent Cabernet Sauvignon, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Latro Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon gives up notions of crushed red and black currants, warm plums and baked cherries with touches of garrigue, dusty soil and bay leaves. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm and grainy with lovely freshness and great intensity in the mouth, leading to a long, purely fruited finish. (LPB)" (10/2018) K&L Notes: Gianna Kelly, a Sonoma County native, got her degree in chemistry while finding her love for wine. She landed a job at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars where she could hone her skills for Cabernet Sauvignon. Her reputation spread which resulted in her rising to new heights as assistant winemaker at both Cardinale and Lokoya; two of Napa Valley's most incredible Cabernet Sauvignon based wineries. Now, as head wine maker at Galerie, she can explore several important sub appellations of Napa. The "Latro" bottling is sourced from Knights Valley. This is a cool climate located at the base of Mount St. Helena. Hard, inhospitable mountain soils restrict root development, which creates smaller berries and lower yields that bring distinctively mineral notes to this 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The darkly handsome result is a charismatic and versatile wine with instant, irresistible appeal. [kajstromer.jpg]( Stromer]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: December 15, 2020 This Cab is about as seamless as they come. Sourced from vineyards located in the same area as the legendary Peter Michael reds (which sell for well north of $100), the Galerie Cab is a wine that punches well above its price tag. When I first tasted the wine, I knew immediately we were onto something special. There was a very refined and regal aspect to the aromatics, berries and herbs and a hint of wood spice. While fully developed in the glass the wine is silky smooth on the palate. Eventually I decided to save the rest of the bottle for dinner. Once home I poured it into a decanter as I prepared an American Wagyu steak from Snake River Farms. I delicately seared all four sides of the cut in my cast iron pan and let sit for a few minutes as I poured the wine into my glass. I was surprised to see just how much the wine has opened and how complex it had become. Together, the steak and the Cab made for a perfect combination. I'll be revisiting that duet very soon. I strongly urge you to do the same. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2015 Barale Fratelli "Cannubi" Barolo]( [2015 Barale Fratelli "Cannubi" Barolo]( ($69.99) 96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Classic Nebbiolo aromas of perfumed berry, rose petal, iris, new leather and balsamic whiffs of camphor shape the expressive nose. Smooth and enveloping, the full-bodied delicious palate doles out raspberry compote, juicy morello cherry, cinnamon and star anise framed in polished, velvety tannins. (KO)" (07/2020) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Barale Fratelli 2015 Barolo Cannubi offers a powerful nose with a hint more alcoholic power (measured at 14.5%) that reminds us of the warm and sunny growing conditions experienced in this vintage. There is a sweet note to the fruit that comes forward with candied almond or cherry liqueur and ultimately finishes with spice, tar and tobacco. Eleonora Barale farms half a hectare in the celebrated Cannubi site. Craigellachie utilizes worm tubs with a very low copper content that, in combination with very long fermentation times, contributes to a rare and desirable sulfurous trait in whisky (not to be confused with the strong and undesirable sulfurous notes occasionally found in older sherry butts that were treated to prevent spoilage). The end result is a pungent aroma that when young is often described as meaty or like boiled cabbage, but when matured works its way into complex sweet fragrances such as pineapple and other tropical fruits and floral notes. These beautiful flavors offer aromatics in combination with palate weight and make Craigellachie a prized malt for blenders and single malt enthusiasts alike. When in combination with sherried wood, there is nothing else like it. The tropical flavors mingle with the nuttiness of the sherry to make a whisky unmatched in flavor, weight, and aromatics. These rare casks typically command astronomical prices, but as always, thanks to our long standing direct relationships in Scotland, weâve been able to secure a cask or two that offer unparalleled value in the single malt category. [David-otheningirard.jpg]( Othenin-Girard]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: December 09, 2020 We're obviously into Craigellachie, we just can't say no to these great casks. This one is the perfect contrast to the excellent, although much more restrained, 14 year bottled under the "Behind the Highlander" label. Here 16 years in a first fill sherry have resulted in the expected loveliness. The color is tawny. A perfect nose of roasted nuts, wisps of bitter herbs (thujon, gentian), stewed fruit and spice. This opens to old exotic wood, vanilla bean, fresh light arabica and brown sugar. It takes water, but I think is best with just a drop. This one reminds me of a more integrated version of the Glendronach 11 year that we sold quickly earlier this year. Lots to love here. [jeffreyjones.gif]( Jones]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: December 04, 2020 This one is a winner for sherry cask influenced single malts fans. The nose is rich and complex but also delicate and inviting. In the mouth it is soft and fruity with wonderful sweet notes and a creamy mouth feel. There is a lovely honey and dried fruit finish. I tasted this single malt with a splash of water. [andrewwhiteley.gif]( Whiteley]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: December 02, 2020 Oh Lordy. Unmistakably Craigellachie. This cask is a doozy. It's charged from a sherry butt yielding just 562 bottles and what a cask it must have been. It's not the darkest whisky in the world, but it's dark enough and carries textbook perfect sherry notes. First off the nose - it's Cragellachie all the way. That meaty, rich, fragrant and hulking spirit is assertive. But any of the acrid sulfur nature you sometimes get with a low copper contact spirit is long gone. It's really showing off the fruity side. Dark blackberries and ripe raspberries mingle with the sweet syrupy nature of the sherry. Toffee and hard candy and yogurt covered raisins abound. The palate is surprisingly lifted - it's rich and flavorful without being excessively heavy. The finish hints at a creamy nature and leaves your mouth coated in chocolate dipped raisins and nuts. It's a very special whisky from a very special distillery. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2015 Smith Haut Lafitte, Pessac-Léognan]( [2015 Smith Haut Lafitte, Pessac-Léognan]( ($139.99) 99 points James Suckling: "The currants and blackberries on the nose are very impressive with wet-earth and lavender undertones. Full body and super-integrated tannins that melt into the wine. The quality of the tannins is incredible with fantastic length and mouthfeel. So much concentration and balance at the same time. Such beauty. From biodynamic grapes. This is the greatest wine ever from here." (12/2018) 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This vintage is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, matured in 65% new oak barrels. Medium to deep garnet-purple, the 2015 Smith Haut Lafitte has a totally dazzling nose of exotic spices--star anise, fenugreek and Sichuan pepper--over a core of chocolate-covered cherries, wild blueberries, plum preserves, violets and earthy wafts of truffles, moss, tilled black soil and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced and packing a lot of flavor into a relatively modest package, it fills the mouth with spice and herb-laced black and blue fruit layers, supported by very ripe, very finely grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length. This is already a show-stopping, heart-pounding beauty, but should also age incredibly! (LPB)" (02/2018) 97 points Decanter: "This is exceptionally good, with extremely well placed damson and cassis fruit, a brush of caramel, smoked bacon and bitter chocolate. There's layer upon layer of flavour here, all spliced together by the most beautiful, juicy acidity. This is a Smith Haut Lafitte that has improved during barrel ageing, and will deepen even further in bottle. Bright, grippy acidity gives those fine tannins a bounce, and overall the texture is silky but with teeth lurking beneath. As of 2017, 40% of the vineyard is biodynamic, accounting for almost the entirety of the grand vin. And a black and gold label this year, continuing the trend! (JA)" (03/2018) 96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Another wine from the Cathiard family I was able to taste on multiple occasions is the 2015 Smith Haut Lafitte and it's brilliant stuff readers should snatch up. Offering a huge nose of chocolatey dark fruits, roasted herbs, graphite and flowers, this big, rich, opulent beauty has building tannin, loads of structure and great mid-palate. It will drink nicely for 20+ years. 96+" (11/2017) 96 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine is dense in expressive, dark fruit and solid tannins which give it a rich, enveloping feel. With its spicy score and crisp acidity, there is great potential for aging. *Cellar Selection* (RV)" (04/2018) 96 points Wine Spectator: "This pumps out some serious blackberry, boysenberry, raspberry and black currant fruit flavors, with the texture of compote and a racy edge thanks to a terrific bolt of graphite that runs throughout. Waves of anise, roasted apple wood and tobacco drive the finish, with the fruit keeping pace easily. Destined for a long life. Best from 2025 through 2045. *Highly Recommended* (JM)" (03/2018) 95+ points Vinous: "Explosive and powerful in the glass, the 2015 Smith Haut Lafitte is going to need time to come into its own. Black cherry, gravel, smoke, bittersweet chocolate, leather, licorice and savory herbs effortlessly fill out the wine's ample frame. The 2015 is an especially dark, concentrated Smith Haut Lafitte. Swaths of tannin carry the wine into a huge finish accented by hints of raspberry jam, chocolate, leather and tobacco. Today, the 2015 is more power than finesse. It will be interesting to see how things develop from here. (AG)" (02/2018) 95+ points from Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "The 2015 Smith Haut Lafitte has a lush and generous bouquet with black cherries, raspberry and rose petal scents, those shucked oyster shells that I noticed out of barrel surfacing with aeration. There is wonderful purity here and it blossoms with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry, layers of red berry fruit, allspice, cedar and tobacco with a structure and insistent finish that suggests it will age over many years. This is a sophisticated young Smith Haut Lafitte, precocious in talent and bound to age with style and class. This is a seriously fine Smith Haut Lafitte that I feel will get better and better with age. One to watch."
