Layered, medium to full-bodied, and beautifully textured on the palate, it's an exotic, incredibly satisfying Chardonnay from this estate that's ideal for drinking over the coming 4-5 years, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it keep longer." (06/2019) K&L Notes: A remarkable price on a remarkable wine from one of the Sonoma Coast's most legendary sites, Charles Heintz Vineyard. Planted back in 1982 to a selection of heritage clone Chardonnay, over nearly four decades this vineyard has produced some of the state's finest and most highly regarded bottles of Chardonnay from legendary producers such as Littorai, Williams Selyem, Ceritas, DuMOL and the incredibly hard to get sparkling wines of Ultramarine. This site is famous for producing richly flavored wines with exotic fruit and palate weight whilst retaining impeccable balance and brisk coastal acidity from the cooling winds and fog right off the neighboring Pacific. Our direct purchase from Migration (part of the Duckhorn family) allows us to bring you this previously mailing list only wine at a super sharp price of almost 50% off the original release SRP! Here's a chance to sample one of California's crown jewel vineyards for a fraction of the typical cost. (Ryan Woodhouse - K&L Wine Merchants Domestic wine buyer) [ryanwoodhouse.gif]( Woodhouse]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 14, 2020 Wow! This is an explosive, exotic Chardonnay just bursting with ripe, golden, honeyed fruit. Wonderfully creamy on the palate with apricot, poached pears, crème brûlée, pecan brittle. It's certainly a rich , ripe wine, perhaps even a little hint of botrytis adding a spice and complexity of its own, but the wine also has a wonderful brightness and fresh acidity. I think that is why this vineyard is so beloved, it can produce Chardonnay with such opulent flavors and textures without sacrificing vibrancy and energy. To get a Charles Heintz Chardonnay at this price is very rare and the team at Migration (Duckhorn) did a stellar job capturing the unique qualities of this celebrated site. This one is sure to please. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2013 Sandhi "Sanford & Benedict Vineyard" Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir (Previously $60)]( Price: Hidden 92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2013 Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict has fleshed out nicely since release. Today if offers sweeter red fruits nuances of strawberries and cherries, as well as attractive notes of mint and flowers. Medium-bodied, elegant, and silky on the palate, it has loads of charm in a lightly textured style ideal for drinking over the coming 5-7 years." (08/2017) 92 points Vinous: "The 2013 Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict captures the personality of this site in its textured, enveloping personality. Layers of red and blue-fleshed stone fruits pretty pretty much bury the 100% whole clusters, while silky tannins add to an overall impression of suppleness. Underlying saline notes add energy and nuance in this impeccably, inviting Pinot Noir from Sandhi. (AG) 92+" (08/2015) [ryanwoodhouse.gif]( Woodhouse]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 11, 2020 Here's a wine practically made for Thanksgiving dinner! Famed Sommelier Raj Parr and renowned winemaker Sashi Moorman founded Sandhi wines back in 2010 with a pure focus on crafting world-class, Burgundian inspired wines from top vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills. The style of these wines is guided entirely by efforts to capture the sense of place and the individuality of season. This library 2013 bottling comes from THE Grand Cru site of the region, Sanford & Benedict vineyard. It is also notably from the highly sought after original, own-rooted plantings of Pinot Noir from 1971. The vines were grown from cuttings of Mount Eden selection thought to have been brought from Louis Jadot in Burgundy. The 2013 is still a powerful wine despite its long rest in bottle. Concentrated, deep red berry fruits, winter spices, sandalwood, bramble and undergrowth notes and plenty of dusty earth tones. Sashi loves to use lots of whole cluster and that is in good effect here with lovely high-toned aromatics and a fine but persistent structure. Quite vibrant and powerful in an understated way. The intensity here isn't from ripeness, extract, or oak, it permeates from old vines, low yields and a deft winemaking touch in the cellar. This is a stunning bottle of Pinot from one of the top producers in the state. All of this is compounded by our incredible price point some 50% lower than typical retail! --------------------------------------------------------------- [2012 La Rioja Alta "Viña Ardanza" Reserva Rioja]( [2012 La Rioja Alta "Viña Ardanza" Reserva Rioja]( ($34.99) 95 points James Suckling: "Traditional and beautiful in character with plum, balsamic, orange-peel and leather aromas and flavors. It's medium-to full-bodied with creamy texture and a long, intense aftertaste. Drink or hold." (10/2020) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Garnacha is an important component in the 2012 Viña Ardanza Reserva, where it represents 20% of the blend (the rest is, of course, Tempranillo). 2011 was a difficult vintage for Garnacha, so Viña Ardanza was not produced that year and they jumped from 2010, which had the mention "Selección Especial," to 2012, where it returns to the regular Reserva. The wine is a prototype of polished and aged Rioja with a ruby color with some orange and a developed nose with subtle aromas of decayed leaves, sweet spices and some cherries in liqueur even, quite complex and harmonious. The palate is velvety but rich, with resolved tannins and a fine chalky mouthfeel, sleek and elegant, terribly balanced. The flavors are pure and defined, and there is an overall sense of harmony that I like very much. Brilliant Ardanza! They produced no less than 600,000 bottles of this wine, which is remarkable. It has been in bottle since March 2016, so it's very approachable but should also age nicely in bottle. Drink or keep. (LG)" (10/2020) K&L Notes: La Rioja Alta's Viña Ardanza has been our most popular Rioja for several years. It is no wonder, as this is the gold standard for traditional bodegas: a winery that ages their wines the old fashioned way, meaning three years in barrel with two rackings a year, followed by three years in bottle. According to the winery, the blend is, "80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha. The Tempranillo grapes come from 30-year-old vines planted in our Viña Ardanza vineyards in Fuenmayor and Cenicero. The Garnacha grapes come from old, goblet-pruned vines planted at an altitude of 600 m above sea level in Tudelilla (Rioja Baja), in plots adjacent to our Finca La Pedriza estate." [chrisdepaoli-new.jpg]( DePaoli]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 09, 2020 Always fire. Sweet dust, fruit leather, allspice and red cedar sawdust explosion. La Rioja Alta's calling card, that savory snickerdoodle finish, is still there and the journey to that end is just as pleasant as the conclusion. We don't need to convince you this is good, as it gets top scores at a stroll. A heavyweight wine that might also be a top pound-for-pound contender. Christmas came early this year. [AndrewTobin.jpg]( Tobin]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 07, 2020 This is one of our staff and customer favorites. Every vintage is amazing and it was one of our most well received wines last year. This year is no different. Upon opening it you get this funk that makes me think of Brie with a fruit compote. As it opens though that quickly blows off and turns into classic Rioja! Black olives, strawberry, wood dust and black cherry. The palate is brighter with red and black fruits blending and balancing itself out with dusty earth and spice. The finish is a little creamy and doughy and everything you want from this region! ---------------------------------------------------------------
[2016 Fombrauge, St-Emilion]( [2016 Fombrauge, St-Emilion]( ($36.99) 93-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a perfumed wine, likely thanks to a dollop (7%) of Cabernet Franc. It has ripe fruit characters, pleasant richness and a firm structure. (RV)" (04/2017) 94 points James Suckling: "There's a very rich and powerful core of red-plum and mulberry aromas and flavors here, delivering an assertive and very shimmery, polished palate. Great tannin texture. Long and regal. Every bit as good as the 2015, but more lively in 2016." (02/2019) 94 points Vinous: "The 2016 Fombrauge has come together beautifully during its aging and is now a much more refined wine than it was from barrel. Sweet red berry fruit, mocha, espresso, mint and floral notes all grace this exquisite, mid-weight Saint-Ãmilion. The 2016 is simply impeccable, not to mention incredibly delicious. There is not much more to it than that. (AG)" (01/2019) [stevebearden.gif]( Bearden]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: October 08, 2020 This consistent property run by the owner of Chateau Pape-Clement seems to get more elegant and sophisticated with each vintage. This opens with aromas of violets, toast, ripe black cherries and a trace of licorice. The middle is filled with cherry and plum flavors that pick up a touch of spice as they linger on the long, limestone tinged finish. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2018 Moulin de la Gardette "Cuvée Ventabren" Gigondas]( [2018 Moulin de la Gardette "Cuvée Ventabren" Gigondas]( ($39.99) 96 points Decanter: "This is deep, vinous and driving, chock full of fruity berry acidity. It's really vibrant, with a subtle mineral seam and stalks that work well here, lending fragrance but without contributing hardness or astringency. It's generous with a very long finish but not excessive - balanced and drinkable, but don't underestimate its ageing capacity. A selection of the oldest vines of the estate (65 to 115-years-old), organically grown on sandstone and marl, handpicked, whole-bunch fermented with indigenous yeasts and bottled without filtration or fining after maturing in old foudres and demi-muids. (MW)" (09/2019) 91-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From vines 80 to 100 years old, the 2018 Gigondas Ventabren is similar in style to the Tradition but slightly more concentrated and tannic. Pretty aromas of fines herbes, rose petals and orange zest join ripe cherries on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is creamy in texture, fading elegantly into a long, silky finish. (JC)" (08/2019) K&L Notes: The Cuvée Ventabren is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault from the propertyâs oldest vines, ranging from 80 to 100 years of age. All fermentation is done in cement tanks and the wine is aged for 18 months in large oak foudres. The wine is loaded with brambly black fruit, spice notes and that ever-present garrigue. Possessing a beautifully full-bodied texture and an ample finish, this wine resonates and has all the hallmarks of a great southern Rhône wine. It is approachable now but has plenty of stuffing for short-term or long-term cellaring. Serve it with roast meats, braises and stews. Youâll see why we keep coming back for JBâs wines. [keithmabry.gif]( Mabry]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 04, 2020 From JB's oldest vines - the Ventabren is always one of my favorite wines of the year. That old-vine character translates to more finesse, a longer finish and even more terroir character. Brimming with brambly red fruit and smoky minerals, this also rides high on the exotic spice notes of clove, cardamom and sandalwood. The tannins are fine and the balance is superb - as always! Suited for a short rest in the cellar, this will provide so much pleasure for years to come. [kajstromer.jpg]( Stromer]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 04, 2020 Do not discount the impact that 100-year-old vines can have upon a wine. It can be profound. And, do not discount the impact that 10% Carignan has on this wine. The sauvage nature of Carignan gives this old vine Grenache a boost of the exotic. I fell in love with the wine immediately upon tasting it. Fans of Gigondas and other premium southern Rhone wines will love this for its unique blend of the classic flavors; fresh berries and roasted herbs with that dash of exotic spice, a hint of bitter chocolate and robust structure. This is a really great choice for the cooler months of the year. ---------------------------------------------------------------
[2009 Veedercrest Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon (Previously $125)]( [2009 Veedercrest Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon (Previously $125)]( ($49.95) Veedercrest's Mount Veeder Cabernet is crafted from the famed "Pym-Rae" vineyard, now responsible for Alfred Tesseron's (Pontet-Canet) signature cult Napa Cabernet. Back in the day, Veedercrest was a staple producer of Napa Valley Cabernet and Chardonnay until the mid-1980s, even garnering plaudits from the eminent Steven Spurrier at the 1976 Judgement of Paris. The label ceased production in 1986 but was revived in the 2005 vintage with a series of dynamic wines of exceptional depth and power. The "Pym-Rae" vineyard is at the heart of this wine, a property that was long owned by Robin Williams and named after his children. It's a remote, steep, and unforgiving site, but Tesseron's acquisition only further cements the site's singular pedigree. The Veedercrest winemaking team makes full use of this impeccable fruit to craft uncompromising, bold, and distinctive wines from this singular terroir. [ryanwoodhouse.gif]( Woodhouse]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: September 19, 2020 Very opulent, polished, exotic and rich. Huge density of ripe mountain fruit, big but polished tannins and a lush, decadent mouthfeel. Despite the almost hedonistic upfront attack, the wine has brightness and poise to bring focus to the mid-palate and refined finish. 2009's moderate and even growing season allowed winemakers to wait for optimal ripeness without fear of losing acidity to heat spikes or other anomalies. This wine really shows the quality of the vintage. It's very complete and drinking beautifully with a long life (maybe another 15 years) ahead of it. Very classy stuff indeed. [chrisdepaoli-new.jpg]( DePaoli]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: October 05, 2020 A dinner party showboat that distances itself from the field by doing pretty much everything well. The most overused quote in wine is that Napa Cab is so expensive, but at half the cost of comparable bottlings this wine is exhibit A for why the area has become so prized. An aggressive and muscled '80s movie star that shows everything off, this is flashy and character-packed juice that wants you to like it. With a wealth of red and black fruit mixed in with sweet cedar and cigar tones that cascade into round, svelte tannins on a massive finish, it could go another decade, but should be drank now, soon, and often. If your friends can't stop talking about their last visit to a cult Cab property, bring a bottle of this and brag about the cost. ---------------------------------------------------------------

Nicely done and delicious. 18+/20 points (ECB)" (04/2017) [ryanwoodhouse.gif]( Woodhouse]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 04, 2020 The 2013 Acumen "PEAK - Attelas Vineyard" Cabernet is a wine of pure class and pedigree. This wine eschews any sense of over-the-top ripeness or extraction in favor of purity, sense of place, varietal typicity, balance and poise. While it hails from the high slopes of Atlas Peak, in style this wine has more in common with classical Left Bank Bordeaux than modern day Napa Cab. A deep brick red in the class with ruby hues; the nose gives off wonderful wisps of redcurrant, bay leaf, cigar box, pencil shavings, struck rock and dry soil. With time in the glass darker notes of cassis, and camphor emerge. These characters recur on the palate as gentle waves of flavor lap against refined structural tannins. With deep red fruits, earthy undertones and volcanic minerality from Atlas Peak's rugged rocky soils, the wine is medium plus bodied with fine, elegant texture and supple mouth feel from 5+ years maturation in bottle. This is such a wonderful wine to savor. You can smell, taste, and feel the Old-World refinement and elegance the late, great Denis Malbec instilled into this bottling. He was an emerging superstar winemaker, born and raised at Château Latour where his father was cellar master, on a path to making some of Napa Valley's finest wines of a generation before he sadly passed away at just 46 years of age. Yet his legacy lives on in this bottle. A winery direct deal means we can bring you this absolutely eye-opening Cabernet for a song. Share it this holiday season with family and friends or keep it in the cellar for the next 10-15 years...either way you'll be very happy you did. [Tim Telli]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 04, 2020 Dusty Cabernet Sauvignon flavors of cassis, plums and mulberries. Some high quality oak notes too. There is a nice vein of minerality that runs through this wine and accentuates the texture on the palate. This shows the more elegant side of what Napa Valley is capable of producing. It is classy and refined, and is in a great drinking window, having had a number of years of bottle age to soften the wine so that it is drinking very well right now. This is a great deal for under $100 in Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and I would drink now without hesitation and expect the wine to age effortlessly for at least another decade. This would be a perfect wine to drink with the upcoming holiday fare. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2016 La Massa "Giorgio Primo" Toscana]( [2016 La Massa "Giorgio Primo" Toscana]( ($84.99) 98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The consistency and depth of this wine is just incredible. George the First casts mesmerizing spells of spice, tar and smoke. This is a blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. This is another outstanding effort from Fattoria La Massa and its eccentric but visionary founder, Giampaolo Motta. (ML)" (09/2019) 96 points Vinous: "The 2016 Giorgio Primo is flat out stunning. It is also a rare Giorgio Primo in which Merlot takes the leading role, the last being 2007. Even with all of its fruit intensity, the 2016 retains terrific energy, tension and drive. All of the elements come together in a statuesque, arrestingly beautiful Giorgio Primo. The 2016 spent 16 months in French oak, 50% new. It is an absolutely unforgettable wine from La Massa and proprietor Giampaolo Motta and his team. The nose of this wine is hypnotic, subtle, inviting and a swirl of aromatics. It doesn't boast gobs of fruitâthis is wine. There's more subtlety than effusiveness but it is just so hard to be subtle when it is showing so muchâthe delicate sandalwood, cocoa powder and earthy boldness, no herbaceousness. Just, wow. On the palate the wine is powerful, and you can sense the intensity, but it is so well balanced it doesn't come across as big. Instead, it is focused, long and full of soil and fruit. I have had some vintages of this wine in the past where the tannin stood out in a young wine needing age, but this wine is so well put together, it is utterly seamless. Finish is the wrong word. It doesn't seem to finish but takes a new direction, elevated, aromatics release again, and it lasts for minutes on your tongue. This is one of the most complete and exceptional Bordeaux blends from Italy that I have ever had. Move over Sassicaiaâthere's a new guy on the block! A beautifully subtle and sophisticated oeil de perdrix colour, this also comes with a very fine bead which threads its way from the base of the glass to the surface of the wine. The dainty red fruit is soft and supple with elegance, energy and a gently persistent vinosity. The dosage of 6g/l is perfectly weighted against the fresh acidity. It has great length and equilibrium - this will age with ease. (JS)" (05/2019) 95 points Vinous: "A Champagne of precision and class, the 2007 Brut Rosé Cuvée Elisabeth is light, airy and finely cut. This newest batch is from the same unnamed source and continues to represent some of the best value available for old cask strength bourbon anywhere in the world. The Doc Swinson's brand was started by a small (and very lucky) bottler in Washington state who'd made a name for themselves finishing Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee whiskies in various wine casks. When they had an opportunity to secure some high-quality mature Kentucky straight bourbon, they jumped at the chance and so did we. The source of this excellent bourbon is so concerned about its identity being revealed that the barrels are dumped in Kentucky before being transported to the bottler in anonymous totes. Usually we insist on having some idea of where the products we sell are produced, but one taste of this stuff and those standards get thrown out the window, as it's just too good to care to argue with. We will likely never know exactly where it was made, but as long as it keeps tasting this good, we won't complain. The most special bourbons from Doc are under their "Rare Release" line. This is the 7th batch of this truly small batch line, but only the second of the unbelievably popular 15 year. This batch contains just 27 barrels and only 100 cases will be available in California exclusively at K&L. Bottled at a cask strength of 109.8 proof, it has all the complexity and depth you'd expect from a great old Kentucky bourbon. --------------------------------------------------------------- There are now several K&L email lists, where wine enthusiasts like yourself can sign up for categories that interest you.
